Finally some progress. New GE sidepods to replace these original ones have been folded up. Apparently using corflute for the skirts is the go.

My updates are rather meagre. I finally got around to filling in all of the COD paperwork yesterday.

Some Konis have been dummy fitted into the front corner. The Penske shocks were never going to get COD approval and the line to the external canisters went out the front of the tub into the nose right were the radiator hoses will go. This wasn't a problem with previous set up as the radiators were located in the sidepods not the nose.

And speaking of getting back into the shed I have finally saved up for a new 11 x 14 metre shed. Downsizing from a house with the equivalent of a 6 car garage underneath it to a place with just a double garage was a real shock to the system.

Would you believe that some significant progress has been made and that it looks like she will be running for 2019?

There is getting a long list of new parts including the nose, radiator, brake pistons, shock absorbers (the Penkes couldn't be used with a COD), harness, harness mounts (originally the metal ends of the harness had simply been bent. This method is no longer possible), a taller roll hoop, side pods and fibreglass bodywork. Currently new ends to the rear wing are being made as the originals had some serious cracking issues that only became evident once the paint was removed.

I may have it confused but I'm sure he was building one from not many parts. Like from half a tub or something?

Thought he was still doing his spaceframe hillclimb car with the bike engine. Vaguely remember a mention of change of housing and/or shed some years ago which probably wouldn't help.

How much of the tub did Sheady have to go through?

A friend is doing an earlier F2 recreation at the moment from remnants of a car that had a huge prang in 69 or 70 up at Lakeside or Surfers - first non-spaceframe in 50 odd years. It had been retubbed once already by that stage, but seems to be cursed. Turning a 15~20kg lump of steel for a component on it, it jumped out of the chuck and somehow he was in the line of fire, getting him right between the eyes and he woke up in a pool of blood.

I haven't needed any of them yet, but it is nice having them around in case I ever do need them.

Did you send the wheel outers? If so they are about to be used, although I think I purchased them from one of the previous owners. It turns out that old hard tyres are really hard to get off rims spun from 2mm aluminium. The new ones I'm using are 3mm.

Just when I thought that completion was in sight we have come across some new issues. The first related to the front wings which are constructed of aluminium. They were of different widths and had already been rebuilt enough times that another rebuild wasn't possible.

The next issue related to the titanium headers. There were a few issues. Firstly they had a few scrapes and dings from hitting the ground, secondly when the car was lifted the suspension drooped down and hit the headers and thirdly the headers plate was deflecting against the head causing an exhaust leak. This had required the manufacture of a mew header plate.

I'll be interested to see what other things turn up. I'm amazed how a car that can look 99% can have so many issues come to light once dismantled. I'd hate to think what one may find with cars that only look 75%.

About a month ago a Nissan powered Mk7 came up for sale. It was advertised at 26k which I'd have regarded as really cheap. The car was only on the market for a day or two.
