Pads: Switching road pads to track pads regularly?

Plan is to get some road pads for road use and then switch to track based pads just for track days and then switch back to road pads for road use on the same rotor.

    Will this cause a problem?

Mate reckons this can lead to disc cracking and warping over time. Reckons either stick with the one pad for both or swap rotors when swapping pads (more expensive than I like).

Nice question. I don't know the answer but think that its not a good idea, simply because pads transfer some material to the rotor as part of the bedding in process. That process does not seem to be compatible with using two different types of pads.

260DET, that pad transfer to rotor is exactly what I'm concerned with (as well as cracking).

If you had to do it you would end up having to bed the pads to the rotor every time you did the swap.

If you use similar designed pads
Then it won't be a problem
    i.e.... DS2500 for street DS3000 for track

    pads & Rotors

I do this all the time - stock pads for rd and ds3000 or sbs for track in wknds

I do go through rotors but not becase of this but due to wear on track

So I guess if you doing this on regular basis you wont have this problem as you will go thru rotors quicker

There is a way to do this - you have to read between the lines of how to bed in pads. If you use a harsh pad, and drive it and brake a little, but not long enough to let it heat up, then let it cool, and repeat, this is usually what they tell you will remove the 'desirable' stuff deposited on the rotor. So you do that deliberately with a harsh pad, then put whatever the pads are you want to run next, and bed them in 'properly'. At least it's what I'm told.

Did it for years on the old racecar, never noticed any ill-effects.... the car still runs the same rotors! This was switching between stock road pads and Ferodo DS11s (showing my age here)

Nafe (or anyone else), did you take any extra precaution on cooldown (ie still use brakes alittle on cooldown laps so temp drop isnt drastic etc)?

I suspect the brakes weren't subject to drastic heat changes as the DS11s were a very hard compound (used to last 2 seasons of races and sprints), so the warmup was probably more progressive. Haven't done it for a while now, I just leave the DS2500s in all the time.....and the old man's car is trailered now so no need to swap pads anymore.

Good point. Bugger all drivers at the sprints even warm their brakes up, never had a problem even with drilled rotors myself. Warm up, cool down FTW.

    suck it and see....

I am thinking of the same thing, just not for a few months until it's ready for the track.

Bed in process might need to be done each swap, *squirt* *break* *squirt* *break* *squirt* *break* *squirt* *break* *squirt* *break* *squirt* *break* *squirt* *break* done
