Spongy brakes after misspelling the word Brakes.

GLXi Lancer just got new rear drum pistons, a seal kit in each front caliper and a master cylinder seal kit. No noticable pitting on anything, it actually looked very clean/new.

The brakes are still very soft however after being bled a handful of times.

What could cause this guys? I didn't think there was too much to brakes and its beyond me. Can a failed booster cause this?

Failed booster will make the pedal hard.

Did you bleed the master before you put it on?

The angle some masters sit on when installed means they will always hold some air if you don't "bench bleed" them first.

you put the calipers back on the wrong sides and the bleed screw is now at the bottom instead of the top.

I mean yeah you might bolt them up that way but surley when you went to bleed them youd see the fuckup.

no, it's an easy mistake, especially if you have never seen the problem before. You'd be surprised how frequently it happens.

ive had cars come into work like this after the owners have worked on them. had me scratching my head for a while once with a VN statesman, having gone through the motions and not figuring it out why the pedal was spongy. turned out it had two left hand calipers up the front, what a twit. i mean i can understand why you MIGHT put them on the wrong side but to have to left hand calipers on the car?

Yeh, had a mate put his R32/Z32? calipers on his HR31 the wonrg way, reason being that the HR has the calipers on the rear side of the disc, while the new (s/h) ones in their native location were at the front of the disc, and marked left and right as so, so mate puts them on like so, tears his hair out trying to work out why brakes were soft, bled it a million times, got master cyl rebuilt, THEN realised they were on the wrong way....

Because when he went to pull the replacement right hand caliper off the VN at the wreckers he found that it was jammed up against another shitbox and he mighta damged his mullet getting to it so he took the left one instead.

I still reckon the master has air trapped in the end.

    Doesn't have ABS does it?

yes indeed. Bleed it at the master cyl, then bleed it at both sides of the ABS with the motor running, then bleed it at the rear, then bleed the front.

always, when bleeding brakes, start at the master then at the furtherest point from the master.

Same "trick" with my RX7 calipers, need to be swapped to keep the bleeders up. I wouldn't have thought someone "smart" enough to do a brake conversion woudl be "dumb" enough not to realise it quickly.

same as you bleed a caliper but instead of a dedicated bleed nipple, you use the pipe fitting. Start at the rear circuit on the MS first.
