Are they something that need to be replaced? I managed to get them off without cracking them, they're a little hard but not brittle....

Well, after the brakes got the once over and got bled last night, one thing still bugged me, and that was the brake master cylinder.

I mean...it just looked dodgy. There's a bit of fluid weeping out at the bottom of the reservoirs and when you pump the pedal it makes all kinds of moaning noises. And its rusty. I'd like to change the clutch master, but I figured the brake master should be non negotiable.

But I was worried that if it was anything like the clutch, then the nuts holding on the lines would be so corroded on that I'd ruin it trying to get it off.

And hey voila...it came off! Phew (thank fuck)...I'll get a new one tomorrow.

....and what IS that funky white stuff? Never seen corrosion like that before...

Awesome car! Who cares that it's not the real deal, it's still uber cool.

And great work on documenting everything so well with all the pics.

Also the real-deal is well over $100k It's a little bit like the GTHO of Japan The cost compared to a fake one isn't based on reality

Tempted to take them off right now for coating, but the thing is, the priority is getting the car roadable and reg'd, and if say I break a few manifold studs or something getting it off, then I'm stuffed. So I reckon I'll leave it until after the cars got plates....taking the carbs off is only a 20min thing anyway.

If they aren't cracked and too hard they should be fine. They are fairly hard to start with, not like a gasket which you can bend. They aren't exactly cheap either.

That looks liek a pretty standard Datto brake master for the era and I'd be surprised if that brake booster is original equipment. Either way should be no probs finding a replacement brake master. The Sumitomo twin piston calipers and rear drums are pretty standard for 240K/240Z/260Z/240C/260C etc aussie delivered. dattoman will be able to help you with the bore size on that one. Might be able to get one with the bolt-on reservoir instead.

No worries, if they're not supposed to be soft-soft then I reckon they can be recycled. They're kinda like a Bakelite hardness i reckon.

Yeah, looking at the pics in the 240Z Haynes manual I think it's the same master cylinder as the Hakosuka, so I'll go and track down a Zed item later today.

But I think the booster is the stock item for this model:

1971. Woulda thought the 240Z of the same vintage would be the same. I guess it doesn't matter as long as the master bolts up

Since Datto stuff is pretty much all the same, I always get 240K pricing, for some stupid reason it seems to be cheaper than most other models. Like $24.50 for a clutch slave, which would be identical to the one you have bought.

And hey, an L-powered one will be quicker and more reliable than a S20 any day of the week.

    Totally awesome Kev.

Nissan are funny, that slave looks identical to my R31 item.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe, and from this side only! The flight of a half-man, half-bird. Dinosaurs nuzzling their young in pastures where strip-malls should be. Cookies on dowels. All those moments lost in time; gone like eggs off a hooker's stomach. Time to die.

You could always give Craig Williams in SA a call (used to own MadDat) about master cyls. I bought a 240Z one off him back when I did my Mazda ute up. I'm sure he'd know all the different models.

You can reach him via his new business

I can't wait to hear this thing. Nothing beats carby induction noise!
It makes me pine for my 240z

    Im suprised no ones asked.

    Is it an L24?

Yeah s20's aren't an amazingly bulletproof motor (they don't make that much HP up against a decent L28 either)...but saying you have an S20 is a bragging right.

Still...this car is hotness, and i join the Envy queue.

Ok, got a new brake master sorted. It seems that 240K/240Z/260Z have the same Tokico master cyl as I have. I won't say what it cost in case ppl hassle me for paying too much
