    Broken timing belt

Seems to be a large number of Mitsu motors at the local wreckers that have snapped a timing belt and the valvetrain has hit. My question is: Is it cause they weren't changed when they should have been or is it poor servicing causing excessive cam bearing drag and snapping the belt?

Will fixing the valve vs piston issues and fitting a new belt fix these motors?

usually they get a full set of bent valves but the bottom end is ok. it's pretty rare to really damage a piston beyond serviceability but it does happen.

The hydraulic tensioner are prone to failing as well, causing the belt to jump. Ask me how I know.

some mechanics could be neglecting to check and mention this issue to customers as well during regular servicing.

some customers may not even be aware that it needs doing if it's not mentioned.

some customers no doubt "why pay $400, it's running fine" yeah! for now, lol...

valve damage is usally hardly worth messing around with $ wise, just get s/hand engine and be done with it, in most cases.

can be luck of the draw - my vr4 let go when the belt was only 40thou km old.. took all 16 valves & 4 valve guides with it.

    My 2 cents

Olds had a HG NA Galant from new, 4G63 shred a belt at 73000ks, belt due at 80k service.

i have a 6a12tt vr4, you pretty much have to take out the engine to do the timing belt, and take off the intake to do plugs, there cunts of cars

I too have been unlucky enough to have belt go unusually early. Rounding the corner at Edgeworth pub and suddenly there's no compression anymore followed by me putting the boot in and finding no go either. My 20,000km old timing belt had decided to strip it's teeth off.
No bent valves thankfully. I'm pretty sure I've got a non interference motor.

Sorry Chuck I haven't answered your question. It's already been said but the Mitsubishi hydraulic belt tensioners are a bastard of a thing. Great when it works then engine goes boom when it fails. Then fail because it's an out of sight and of mind thing. At least on earlier models that had a chain driven camshaft you know when it was crapping itself. Think of any Magna you've heard with a rattle chain when running full time.

in my lancer i had the cam seals let go, leaking oil onto the cambelt.. which fucked it, but my mechanic picked it up during a service before it could let go.
