Which shit 4x4 has best offroad ability

    Cunts,

Moving back to Aus soon and looking to do a 4x4 trip round the country in a few months or whenever i feel like coming back.

It'll be a second car anywhere from $5k to $15k I guess, dont give a shit how it goes on the road really, but would prefer it not be a piece of farm equipment like those old ass landrovers. It'll just be a dirt shitter for the weekends. Love the SWB Pajeros/Patrols but might not be big enough for a decent trip with 3 ppl, luggage, couple of spares, jerry cans? I have no clue about these things. Pretty much all it has to do is be reliable, comfortable and good in the mud/rocks. I plan to fuck the body up pretty good so as long as the engine is strong I dont care. Would be good if it could tow a half cabin boat (haines hunter/signature whatever the fuck they are)

Mid 90s Pajero/Prado/Disco 4 door seems good mid size without being too gay. Those Patrols/Landcruisers/Rangies look fucking massive but maybe that's all that is up for the task? Fucks me, any ideas?

    Cheers

imho if it needs to be reliable, then prado, landcruiser, patrol or pajero are your only real options.

Bill is too tall for an R35... or anything else really, so I don't know why he'd be plugging one.

As far as budget goes. I was looking at sub $10k 4WDs when I bought my Disco. Pajeros and Landcruisers were all massive mileage, but the Discos were all coming down as alot of people were getting scared of the V8 consumption.

Anyhow, to cut a long story short.

You'll get a good mid-late 90s V8 Disco for under $8000 with well under 200,000km. $600 will buy you an ECU remap (mine gets around 600km from a tank now). They're one of the most capable std 4WDs. Doesn't cost all that much to make em chunky too

Agree, hard to go past a 80 series cruiser or GQ patrol, especially when you need spare parts in the bush.

If I did go away from the Disco, I'd go a 4.2L diesel GQ over an 80. Simple, not much to go wrong

Discos are nice to drive BUT if you get a bad one they will send you broke very quickly.

However, I would not drive one more than a 20km radius from a LR specialist.

A mate of mine set off to drive around Australia in his rangie, blew a head gasket in Canberra (three hours into the trip) could not find a mechanic who would fix it so flat bedded it back to Sydney and went to Bali instead.

    :
I had a Rangie for 9 years. I sold it 5 years ago and still get xmas cards from the Rangie mechanic. I think he appreciates the fact I basically paid to put his kids thru private school.

My brother had a rangie for 4 years, he complained to the dealer about the number of time it broke down, finally the LR dealer turned to him and said "mate, it's because they are very badly built."

Apparently mine was at the bad end of the bell curve.

I will admit I loved driving it but in the end i got sick of the logistics of getting it to the mechanic's workshop and back every fortnight. Plus it always managed to have an episode when I was about to head to the airport of had the race car loaded on the trailer.

5 years of trouble free Commode ute driving has taught me that expensive repairs and annoying breakdowns are for mugs.

    Thought about a dual cab?
The last model Couriers/Bravos arnt bad and are pretty bullet proof. They dont go too bad for what they are, unlike an old shitter non turbo Cruiser or Patrol.

If you're headed for longer trips (into the "outback") I'd only be looking at Landcruisers and Patrols. They are built to take a hammering, and spare parts are available almost anywhere. It can spoil a trip waiting at a servo for some small part to turn up.

They're both incredibly capable, and reasonably comfortable on and off road.

You'll pay a premium for a diesel, but thats because they're better in almost every regard. At the bottom end of your budget, you'll get a decent 60 series cruiser for $5-7k (check for rust in the roof, they rust from the inside out). Next up is a GQ Patrol/Maverik, $5-10k for a good one, and then an 80 Series Cruiser at the top of your budget.

I'm surprised how many mechanics' workshops have wireless internet access in their waiting rooms too.
Don't worry, thats just the self-preservation instinct, in my experience you can safely ignore it.

Its just been said 100 times, but same opinion here - Patrol or Cruiser (and I work in the 4wd game)

A GQ Patrol 4.2 diesel will set you back $6-10k and go anywhere you want to go, even in reasonably standard form. Exceptional reliability and what few parts could possibly go wrong are gonna be available anywhere or able to be replaced with something else. Better if you can find one thats been turbo'd as theyre tediously slow standard.

They also have stacks of space inside for your gear. One thing though is that they dont have a huge amount of space for the occupants - rear legroom can be a bit limited (not that you care if your in the front). Front seats can get a little uncomfy after a few hours driving.

The only decent motor is the 4.2 turbo diesel. Still fairly expensive. Avoid the 3.0 diesel as its a well known grenade engine.

He doesnt care what the body looks like and its the same running gear as a GQ

5 to 10K gets you a hell of a lot of GQ Patrol.

Cannot go wrong with a Landcruiser of any variety. Ive lived in some of the roughest most remote places in Australia everyone out there had landcruisers.
