nah. it died and i didn't try to restart it in the water. had to get winched backwards off a rock, then forwards.

let it drain for a while, pulled the plugs, cranked the bit of water out. started up ok and drove around, some of the electrics were a bit weird. winch died. next day it was apparent there was a fair bit of water in the oil and particularly the tranny - flushed about 6 qts with stuff we gathered from other guys, topped it off when we got out of the trail then drove 100kms home on the highway.

however now i am replacing the fluid from: both axles, transfer case, tranny, engine, air/oil filters, plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor.

kind of burned me out, my summer might be done. I think im going to yank the front axle off, gusset it, outboard the front spring perches so they line up, flip the u bolts and change the engine mounts. maybe manufacture a fucking snorkel.

Iirc the Safari snorkel for the TJ works for the YJ, unless they do one for the YJ.

well. after changing the fluids I went to drive it and it died on the street at some lights near my house. Only got going with tons of revs and lots of cranking. Kinda like dirty fuel. anyway it was enough to get it home and rip apart properly. I discover broken engine mount also. over about 4 weeks of sourcing parts and bits for aftermarket shit i finally ge it wrapped up today.

changed out all the ignition, which involved making a stool to get up tall enough, removing PS/AC and belt to get to all the plugs, but normal shit. then took off the gearbox pan which meant removing the crossmember - an aftermarket belly pan tummy tuck, think it's shown in one of the first pics. heavy sob. had to fab up a tool for my jack to push up the bellhousing that high. Turns out the gearbox mounts, some rubber isolators, are all fucked out. Aftermarket part, on an aftermarket belly pan from a company that went tits up. Eventually track it down and order some after 3 days of looking.

changed all the tranny filters and gaskets, the transfer case, fresh bolts, then changed out the engine mounts, put the tires back on, dropped it and am currently just manufacturing a solution to help push the rear anti-wrap bar back onto the mount on the massive square 30kg crossmember/belly pan.

    yawn, boring post sorry.

edit, yeah, this thing. and getting that blue anti wrap bar back in is proving to be a right bastard, im welding a tag onto it so i can jack it up enough to line up.

My repairs have taken effect, earlier in november the weather finally turned for good and we got our 1st snow dump. Decided to go on a quick run up into the foothills of tahoe to colfax - its about 30 mins from my place and a great day trip, you could spend weeks out there driving around on the dirt roads.

music is our little band, recorded through an iphone for that extra shitty quality.

bit of a test run for a proper snow wheeling/camping trip coming up.

no problem with these tires and rims. irok bias ply. really thick rubber (really heavy) and with the beadlocks i run them at 4-6 psi so they deform over everything anyway.

i blew a rim with my old tires and (regular) wheels and didnt really want to do that again, plus the tires were crap...

this weekend we have the 'biggest 2 storms in 5 years' in nor cal apparently. I'm just about to head out and start going up the hill (the same area as the last video). it was warm last night, the snow level went all the way up to 8000 feet, sunday lunchtime now and its on the way down with a wet cold front that will bring snow down to 1000 feet or so. should be pissing down snow.

    jesus titty fucking.

we have to do this smog test thing in CA every 2 years right? bit of a pain the ass but nothing too major, they have a whole ecosystem set up around getting your shit tested. Basically they employ a bunch of high school drop outs, train them to follow simple instructions to stick a car on a dyno, O2 sensor up the tailpipe and run the govt mandated emissions test. It all gets plumbed into the DMV computers, and away you go.

bit of background. this is what I posted on buzz to some friends today.

    pro tip for the day:
when leaving a smog stop, make sure the 'tech' who has passed the simple motor skill test of sticking a sensor up your exhaust and following repeated basic instructions all day to do emission testing isn't so high at work or so brain damaged from prolonged exposure to carbon monoxide that he forgets to secure your hood in place. Turns out it can be a little inconvenient when you're getting onto i-80 at douglas during xmas shopping and your hood flys up, dents itself by smashing the windscreen and 'slightly' obstructing your view of congested traffic at 60mph.

lucky i didn't monster truck over a prius in my armored car. yes they're gonna fix it, I went back and made something of a scene.

    /end post.

talk about puckering assholes. xmas shopping week on the busiest part of an 8 lane freeway and my fucking bonnet flys up, I can't see DICK and I'm doing 60mph in a jacked up armoured jeep with cars all around me. It's a wonder I didn't kill anyone, even more of a wonder I didn't choke out that motherfucker at the smog stop. close call.

in other news, now that youtube unwadded their panties about copyright music in videos (well, some of the panties) I uploaded a video of one of my favorite trails - the rubicon. This was the trip that got me into wheeling and forced me to buy the jeep. Rode along with my mate Joe in his caged toyota (same guy also owns the ramcharger). Will definitely be doing this trail as soon as the snow melts.

We got out again up to the snow this past weekend with a pretty big group. About 8 or 9 vehicles for a pretty simple trip up past where they stop clearing the road of snow past this little town called Georgetown. We drove from there up to a secluded spot called uncle toms cabin - some real redneck mountain folk live up here, away from those damn 'guvment folk.' In years past they had to give up their full liquor license at the bar, too many people getting absolutely blitzed then driving off into the wilderness. Now they just serve beer and wine

We brought a little charcoal bbq, had a cooked lunch and fire then we all took off home again. I fucked up at the fuel pump - it clicked off after 6 gallons a couple of times and made me think it was full (fuel gauge is dead). I then ran out of gas later on. Siphoned a gallon (no one had any spare tanks which was very strange, it'll never happen to me again, put it that way) drove until I ran out again which was back on dry pavement, then got towed the last 15 miles into town. That was fucking sketchy, 40mph towing at night on a mostly downhill windy mountain road. anyway, some pics and my usual effort at a video. Music was from a jam on Jan 1.

The joop. New lights on the front, fabbed up some little brackets. Also got the gopro mounted up front now. Shiny new hood and windscreen thanks to the smog joint.

4-5 months of the year up at tahoe this is what it looks like when they dont clear the roads

    spot of lunch

shortly before I ran out of fuel

if a mod reads this can they please move it into 4x4....

i need to do an update anyway, just got it back from a bunch of front end work and getting a full cage

edit: just re-reading this. For anyone who's seen that ramcharger in a few of the things above, it also got a cage. And 3 linked front end. and custom suspension, 3 foot coilovers with hoops up through the engine bay. and it has a 600hp 440 being built, should be fun

no idea what that means instigator.

    new cage.

cage sandwiches the body and the frame.

    stinger on the front

flipped the shackles, new hangers and hardware. Also re-attached the front bumper properly. Turns out it was only attached via 2 grade 5 bolts. I've been towed home and pulled out of some tough spots by that bumper, it was actually bent up and probably would have failed the next time it got yanked on really hard. Not really going to be an issue any more.

i gotta clean this thread up.

there was another post somewhere about me blowing it up. oh yeah, cut/paste

last year I did this to it:

I don't think it ever really recovered, at least that's our consensus. It was in the water 45 minutes, after we towed it out it drained a few hours and started up. Got it home, flushed, have probably done 500 miles since. It might have mildly hydrolocked or weakened in the water, then then going up the highway the other day BOOM goes the hottest cylinder. 4L inline 6.

    may 1. boom

    hole in oil pan

    hole in block

    broken rod

just ordered a 4.6L 300hp/340tq jeep stroker long block from golen performance, will probably throw all the fruit at it. work starts in a week or so, i'll try to keep up with it here.

My god man, you managed to kill a 4L! The Stroker sounds like fun, the couple of XJs I've driven seemed to have plenty of poke.

bought some bits for this. its still under surgery.

bought a 300hp 4.6 stroker motor from golen engine performance, was shopping around between strokers and v8s. I want this thing to remain 'street legal' which basically comes down to smog. Too fucking complicated in CA to change it up to a v8, I would have to find one from an OBDI year like a 92-94 LT1 or something, any later motor (I wanted an LS1) and I have to certify the whole thing as OBDII and go through the ringer of special inspections/engineering etc. been there done that fuck that. Also I came to terms with what I wanted to do with it - its more of a rock crawler than desert racer, but this list of parts should give it some hurry up

This should do the job nicely. These guys are the most expensive of the strokers (other than mopar, but I prefer the smaller shops) and they're a performance shop rather than a large-scale engine reco shop like most the other places. Good reviews, and I'm too lazy and un-talented to build up a stroker by myself.

    4.6L. 9:1, decked, bored .030", honed/washed
    speed pro hypereutectic pistons
    ACL main and rod bearings
    federal mogul lifters
scal 4340 forged rods, ARP rod bolts
    comp cam
    cloyes single roller timing set
head is true decked, valve job
SBI 1.94" intake, 1.50" exhaust valves
    Comp cams valve springs/locks

to go with it I picked up:
    - 63mm overbored throttle body
    - 24# injectors
    - MSI rapid fire ignition kit
    - pacesetter extractors, high flow cat, will be re-doing the exhaust after the engine is in

    also have
    - new ARB compressor to replace the old flogged out one
    - new stereo
    - some ideas for a home made snorkel, fuck going near water again before thats done

jobs that have to happen now before the engine turns up this week (it got built last week in conneticut or something)
    - gearbox needs to come out and get overhauled, the old 3 speed auto I sense might be the weak link now
    - front driveshaft needs shortening (I reversed the shackles in the front)
    - rip out the AC system

after thats done, I'm going to freshen up the springs and shocks from the barnyard collection thats under it now, and it should work nice. body wise I have a few things on the go
    - gotta finish fabricating my frame stands
    - building a new set of sliders (the old ones were chopped off due to new front suspension mounts)
    - flat or tube fenders in the front

now that i write it out... seems I have some work ahead of me. will start posting shit up in here, this week will be busy.... sigh. how the hell do you stay motivated to do all this shit sometimes? I have jobs backed up on 4 of my cars now.
