School me in double din headunits

OK I want a unit with all the shit.....and I want it to look factory...something like this

Built in GPS, Bluetooth handsfree, Reversing camera, TV, iPod input, DVD, MP3 yadda yadda yadda...whilst retaining steering wheel control if possible

The factory Nissan double din unit is very basic, dated and well...shit

    These units look rediculously cheap

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-Inch-Car-DV...%3D5%26ps%3D63

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HD-Universal-...item4a9c740134

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Double-Din-Ca...:B:SRCH:AU:101

What should I look out for when buying one?
    Install costs?
Good place to source a reverse camera? (Cost?)
They mention Analog TV...isnt TV digital now?
    Any recommended units?
Anything else that I should know?

get a pioneer fb910bt or a kenwood equivalent. all the others look like shit

install costs are doable, compared to the purchase price (purchase with all the extras you want can get close to 2000 eurobucks)

tv in the car isn't worth it, cause as you said, tv is digita nowadays. you'll be lucky if you get 1 channel or something ....

reverse camera is always dirty. but a pretty convenient extra.

I've just installed an Alpine IVA-W502E pretty much on the basis of it's screen having a higher resolution than everything else. The top of the range Kenwood is the same but I couldn't find one to check it out.

Installation is dead easy nowdays. The unit will come with a short wiring loom and you can buy vehicle looms that are plug and play or solder to the head unit loom. Pulling the dash surround off is probably the most difficult bit (actually don't underestimate this). $50-80 seems to be the going rate and you will be able to negotiate this into the deal.

Built in GPS I didn't really look at. On the Alpine this is a $700 add on box and the price seemd blow out well over $2k for this feature in the others. TBH a $200 Tomtom seems like a much better deal...

Everyone does Bluetooth but some offer it as built in and others prefer an add on module. You might have to be flexible. Have heard mixed reports on Alpine's BT module.

Ditto with ipod connectivity. Everyone does it but some include cables/modules and some don't.

TV haven't heard great reports. The issue seems to be maintaning decent reception.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it

Lindsay, I have bought one of these cheap china all-in-ones recently, still waiting for it to arrive. (I bought one with a manual volume control though - push button volume controls ftl)

I expect to get it in the next couple of weeks, you're welcome to have a look when it's installed if you like.

Ok so i've been doing some homework on these things and I kind of like this unit, as its plain and simple and looks as though it could be a factory item

Yet it has all the features I want such as:

Ability to retain factory steering wheel function buttons

Reverse camera which automatically is displayed when reverse is selected (Full colour Night vision Camera $38 extra) and it measures distance also.

Built in Pre Loaded Australian GPS maps...which apparently are quite good, or you can put Tom Tom maps on an SD card and use them.

DVB-T which is digital TV, from what I have heard the aerial supplied with these units are not to good, but can have ones fitted behind front and rear bumpers for about $280 which give perfect reception as well as a window film style one for around $100 fitted. Can be watched on the move also by grounding the Handbrake wire.

It can also run the Kids factory rear DVD player whilst we use the Sat Nav, watch TV or listen to music.

    Fitting starts from $99

From the Forums I have read they have had some pretty good feedback from almost every single purchaser, and everything seems to work as advertised. The only negative feedback I have read seems to come from local stereo installers, Audio buffs and the like who say they have or have known a heap of people throw them away after 3 weeks.

All these units on Ebay pretty much originate from the same factory in China, yet use Samsung parts.

IMO for $400 you cant go wrong really

Alex you got a link to your unit?....as thats a good point...I forget how much I hate digital audio controls!!!

(yet I can retain my steering wheel audio controls so it isnt to bad)

TJ, I might use him for an Install actually, but to buy a brand name one locally is going to be more than I want to spend for what and how long it will be used for.

But dont worry I will tell him that cunt TJ sent me

EDIT - I haven't gotten anything from these cunts in ages but try

    www.brashimports.com.au

they are aussie based etc so the unit (if faulty) only has to go to them, not Xiang Xhou Lane, Dung Phuk Po

Just bought one, does everything I wanted, although a little more than some similar looking units the clincher was seller is located in Australia, and will Pre Load a Nissan Menu screen for me which is a nice touch and helps keep the factory feel.

Just recieved the unit this morning...within 48 hours of payment...he'll be getting A++++++++++ for feedback

Cars booked in 9am Monday morning for Install.

I was roughly quoted over the phone $150 for install plus $50 to mount and wire in the reverse camera.

Will give a full report then

hmm that looks nice, might grab one for the oldies car, be handy having Bluetooth for phone, seeing as we now have the brilliant "no talking on yer phone while driving" law.

I should have just fitted it myself......just dropped the car off then and got soo much underlying attitude because I'd bought an eBay unit and not one of his $2500 units!

I told him I don't care if something dosnt work don't stress I will sort it out later just fit the deck as best you can.

Infact I'm not sure I trust him now and expect him to deliberately stuff it up!

    Is it digital radio ready.
Focus is a Double DIN factory.
The focus used to display the station ID automatically. I have noticed lately, that the station ID like NOVA, or Fresh, or MMM no longer displays. I think they are all shifting to digital.

So I got the car back, sure as shit he tells me "Oh we could'nt get the TV to get a signal at all, and we could'nt get the steering wheel controls to work"

"But we can sell you this aerial for $200 that'll fix the problem, and this box that'll sort out the steering wheel issue for $240, now that will be $350 for the install thanks!"

Neither the Aeriel or the wires to the steering wheel are / were connected when I picked the car up so I will connect them tommorow and check for BS.....I have heard the standard aeriel that comes with it arnt the best....but no reception at all sounds like BS.

I have a small issue with the GPS also where the home location seems to be stuck on the car stereo installers joint....and I cannot seem to move it....but the program itself looks very impressive.

Video quality is excellent, although where its located in our car is prone to sunlight....it appears to be really setup for low level mounting.

    Reverse camera works well.

Syncs with both mine and the Mrs iPhone no worries, plays all the music thru them wirelessly, which is kind of cool as I can control the car stereo from my phone up to about 20m or so away

Anyway heres a few dodgy arse pics

Have you done yours yet Dale?

I was thinking about getting the same unit as SR20TX, esp since they are Syd I can pay them a visit if anything goes haywire.

Install should be pretty easy in the VY commo, I assume it's a double din HU in there from factory (looks about the right size).
