    IPRA - Improved Production Racing

OK guys, here is a question for you all. Most importantly you must already be a racer to answer this....

    Why WOULD you race IPRA
    Why WOULD'NT you race IPRA

    ???????????????????

    IPRA - Shitty tyres
My number one reason for not even thinking about IPRA...
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."

Is that all? Everyone runs on the same control tyre? i.e. everyone has the same problem?

You mean having to pay through the nose for tyres that go off quickly? Yeah, seems a good enough reason for me.

So whilst trying to take the piss out of me, no-one has actually posted a valid reason to my original question. I thought this was a Racers Forum? Not a toss off Forum. Do any of you actually race a car around corners? Not - i have a mate who does it, not i want to do it, not im building a car that will beat all of you.... anyone actually drive and race a car here?

******* including a roof - not the one my mate drives though*****************

Because we'd have to race against wankers like you ?

And on a serious note, i and quite a few others on PF have actively done a bit of circuit racing Steve...

I got out to start a business and needed the cash, simple as that. Now i'm in a position to do it again there are a few reasons why i haven't done it, but they are subjective to my own personal thoughts. Keep in mind i have owned and raced probably the best suited car to the current rules - a naturally aspirated bridgeported Mazda RX-7...

    * Late model V8 Commodores simply cost too much to be competitive as the weight can't be overcome
    * Early model V8 Commodores don't have enough tyre (225/50/16 max up against a lighter more nimble Mazda RX-7 on the same 225/50 in a 15" version)
    * Late model turbo cars get fucked in the arse under the current rules as they weight hundreds of kilos more than the early model equivalent yet have to run the same size 36mm restrictor. Seriously, what the fuck ?

In summary, the rules penalise anyone who doesn't want to run an early model Mazda or turbo-charged piston car. That's why we are seeing so many people jump into the Under 2 ltr class with late model Civics, Nissans etc - it's easy to be half competitive with a car (that isn't 20 or 30 years old) that doesn't need a 100k budget to overcome some out of date fucked up rules...

I love I.P as a class due to the variety of cars and great racing - and in NSW there are some awesome people both actively racing and involved in the class as committee etc. But be fucked if i could be bothered running under rules that were drafted in the 80's when i was still in primary school.

I'd honestly love to buy Troy's roller VX SS and build that into an I.P car but what's the point ? Spend 100k and still struggle to be Top 5 when the gun early model cars turn up ? And that's after throwing 2k at a set of tyres EVERY round ? Nah, i don't think so...

    Q for Mr FatBoy.
    I can't really see a problem getting VT-VZ stuff down to ~3000lbs.

What weight does the other stuff get down to?
    And then..... cunts outta nowhere!

    Yes, I've done a bit.
Nearly twenty years of racing sports cars, I've also done five Malaysian 12 Hour endurance races, one Bathurst 12 Hour last year, and the 2007 Nurburgring 24 Hour.

I have a late model turbo car sitting in my shed (ex rally car) that could easily be converted to improved production specs if I wanted to.

The reasons I'm not planning to race anytime soon are (in no particular order):
    - the current rules make it too hard to be competitve against EM O2L and also the LM megadollar V8s.
    - the arguments/attitudes about the rules on the other forum.
    - the tyre supply debacle. There have been problems with tyres for this category for years and the fact that the association/s haven't fixed them doesn't make the category particularly attractive.
Boycott temporary street circuits and support permanent racetracks for club level motorsport and driver training.

Biggest negative here is that U2L is regularly under subscribed anwhere except NSW.

IPRA is the "New Historics". Time for CAMS to amalgamate the EM runners as Historic Group Nd (1973-1986) and let IPRA move with the times...

    Nope.
Plenty of other reasons I'm not going to get involved in IPRA.

Absolutely bugger all compared with that. But thats not the issue. I'd like to hear from anyone who is building a car/just built a car, who looked at IPRA and thought 'nope, im going to race in another series'

In life, I find the best way to seek information is to ask a range of people who are able to provide the help I need (despite not being obliged to share it), and then abuse them because they do not meet an irrelevant criteria I set them.

I have just built a LM IP car, to race in E30 BMW series in vic, would not be competitive in open IP competition though, but my M3 is log booked IP car as well (currently uncaged, only for hillclimbs), it will be updated over the next 12- 18 months, and should be reasonably competitive in IP after I send a head to TK and fit bigger cams , some E85 etc, tyres are still a concern though, even in E30 racing, there are a couple of guys that have new tyres every meeting, which gives them a considerable advantage
    E36 M3 12.92 @ 108.64mph, N/A 3.0L
