    VS turbo ute

Here's my ute. It is the second car I have ever owned behind a shitty Mazda 626. I always liked the shape of the vs ute when i grew up so i was stoked that i could get one so soon after i got my licence.

It was originally a mint condition ecotec v6 with getrag 5sp.

The first thing I did to it was make it look a bit better.

Performance wise, I put a 2.5" exhaust and a CAI on the ute first up but the first major performance mods - 'Stage 1' - were diff gears (3.08 -> 3.45) and high ratio roller rockers (1.65 -> 1.9). This was good money spent as the mods complimented each other and i had noticeably more acceleration everywhere. I did a power run at the time and got 120rwkws. I was at uni these years and didn't have any tools or a shed so no other mods took place.

Here are some pics of it during my uni years:

I did uni in Rocky and any car enthusiast who has spent time in Rocky can appreciate that the 'hoon' scene there is great. I cannot remember how many cars spanked me at the lights to raise their self esteem. One thing i noticed during this time was how fast those fucken turbo cars were.

This lead me to spread the last 6 months of uni over 12 months so that i too could own one of these fknwooshcarz. So I drempt up 'Stage 2'. The idea was to get good turbo kit hardware, some mild steel pipe & tube and a $30 swap meet stick welder to tack it all together. Even spread over 12 months uni seemed to take up most of my time and this only left me 2 weeks to get the turbo conversion done! Lucky (a) i had bought all the hardware & collectors beforehand and (b) i was sharehousing with LS400X (off this forum) at the time. We managed to get the majority of the turbo conversion done in these 2 weeks up to the point that it was driveable but with no tune or fuel system.

Here's some pics during the two week build:

I then graduated and got a job in Brissy and put the project on hold for a year and a bit. Finally got a rental with a shed in the heart of Logan Central. I wanted to do all the work this time around but there was one problem... I have extremely limited fab skills. I spent half a year on and off (mostly off) getting a tool collection together and learning how to weld. As of a couple of months ago I finally got enough courage to start the project again. The poor ute has been sitting in the shed right next to the fab area for nearly a year now so it is fucken filty.

Here is what I'm up to currently (all work done by me):
***new 3 bolt flanges and flex joint for turbo manifolds***

    ***new exhaust and intercooler plumbing***

***everything plonked into the bay to test fitment***

I'll try and keep this thread reasonably up to date now that I'm making some progress.

Had a friend with a GT35R powered V6 VS wagon.. she went "fairly ok" .. should be a ton of fun once running. I presume these are lighter then the wagons considering the lack of rear seats windows doors etc.

One of my closer friends also had a vs ute with a RB25DET and big single.. one of the most fun cars Ive ever driven and I can imagine this being very similar.

Great project, impressive doing it all yourself. Are you going to swap the bottom end for a supercharged one, they are damn strong and you can crank the boost and make some real power. Sweet project, be lookin foward to updates.

s/c bottom end for sure. Friend used that on his wagon - forged pistons, rod and crank from factory.

yup, the S/C bottom ends are pretty good, can support 400+ rwhp no worries...

You'd have to check with someone who has owned one, but I think the supercharged ones had a stronger bottom end - maybe you could use one of them?

    Future Plans

Hi guys, I know I don’t even have the car on the road yet but already I’m thinking of future plans. I would like to beef up the engine but nothing too crazy because I’m only after about 400rwhp. I was hoping to stay away from an engine rebuild but I realise that my chances of finding a stronger Ecotec based engine from factory are slim to none. Anyone got any ideas?

Unconfirmed reports are that the supercharged bottom ends are stronger - you'll have to check with someone that knows though

well i had planned on giving the ute a clean and a few things a paint but the weather this weekend was fucken shithouse. i mounted the blower/heater unit instead. the pics make it look bigger than it is; its actual dimensions are 255 x 210 x 110. it should be hidden under the top half of the dash when it goes back on (which is important because i'm not running a centre console anymore). i made the transition pieces out of exhaust tube and computer case lol.

i have been trying to strip weight out of the car but i had to make a compromise with keeping a coolant fed heater unit because the only other alternative - an electric heater unit - is fucken useless in comparison. going coolant fed heater instead of electric heater in my case is a 10kg weight penalty... i can live with that.

you got some mad friends. i would love to have been a passenger in both of those cars. were those cars manual or auto? what was the peak power/power delivery like in both cars?

i have driven my ute on 6psi with no boost controller, fuel system or tune and it was heaps of fun. i can't wait to get this thing finished and wind the boost up to nearly 3 times that amount.

    wrt weights:
1997 Holden Commodore Executive VS II Kerb Weight (kg) 1413
2000 Holden Commodore VS III Kerb Weight (kg) 1359

there is only 54kg difference from factory so not much. i have undergone i bit of weight reduction (offset by the turbo installation) and i hope to be at least 1300kg when the ute gets back on the road.

that's my daily. i have got an a2a intercooled m90 setup lined up for that but that will have to wait a while until this thing is finished.

not much happened this week; too much non-computer based socialising.

i rigged up a clutch switch for the ecu flat shift function. i cleaned out clutch master and slave cylinder and reinstalled. i purchased two 4" speakers (i used to have two 6" speakers). i figured out where i'm going to mount fuses, relays, fusible links and ecu. i figured out a new spot for headunit and new smaller speakers.

i'm no longer going aux meth/water injection but i'll use the high pressure pump i've already bought for intercooler water spray.

here is clutch switch. fuck it was hard to install

    Indeed I do

    both cars were manual.

The v6 wagon would come on just before 3000rpm, and be really strong through the midrange .. around the 3800 to 5500 rpm range. Peak power would taper off then. Exact power i am unsure of but would have been around 320 rwhp

The rb25 ute ran a master power turbo - not china... made in brazil of all places. Was a big laggy to be honest.. probably a laggy GT35

Would come on HARD at 5000.. revved all the way to 8000, made power all the way to 8000 - peaked at 380ish rwhp

work's been busy so i haven't got much done on the ute over the last couple of weeks. i mounted a intercooler water spray setup this weekend. i was originally going to use the hardware for water injection but i need more time to think of where to inject, when to inject, how much to inject, how to alter tune once injecting and what safeguards should be in place. as you can see too much of a head fuck, so for the mean time i'm just going to use my 240V AC 200psi coffee machine pump to spray water on my ebay special FMIC.

i also got the headunit and 4" speakers mounted in the top half of the dash (am not running lower half any more) but was not happy with how it turned out so will give that another shot next weekend.

    Nice setup.
Did you think about reversing the intake manifold so you aren't running the cold side over the dump pipe?

i've got a reversed plenum but i can't be bothered switching it over. besides, there's a shit load of distance between dump and intake pipe.

Great design, looking good. Ditching the glove box altogether, or will it open inside it?

yeah, the ute has been reduced to a road registered "race car". i probably should have started with a crappier car so that i feel less guilty about modding/wrecking it.
