225/45/15. Biggest R spec tyre you can get for an mx5 in aus. They fit under the car perfect too just need to roll the guards for a track like sandown.

    Cal - I've been getting 225-45-15 R888s for $250.

LY - Where are you getting the Nittos from? That's the size I run.

There is progress on the carbon fibre mx5, but nothing to show. I have been buying parts and another delivery of parts have been sent off to the engine builder. I think all i need now is an air filter and an oil cooler, and a couple of clamps.
I am making a set of NA doors at the moment. And this morning i had a friend around making a c.f bonnet, and we where throwing around some ideas for a fastback. And seeing as we need NB fastbacks, i decided to make an NA fastback for the red car to get some data from. Took about 1.5 hrs to come up with the design and cut it/bend it to shape. I will do a wool tuft test at sandown in a couple of weeks. And i will try out v.g placement too. After a couple of runs i will remove the aero 1 at a time to get some data comparisons. I am hopimg to get into the 1:27's.

What about the little mudflap in front of the rear tyre?

    How's the rearwards visibility?

The mudflaps are to stop air hitting the rear tyre, they go under the sill/along the sill a bit, then turn out to the sides in front of the tyres.

Rear visibility is not a concern. This is a test piece to see how the air flows, and if the air stays attatched. I think on the NB fastbacks we will make it less of an angle - extend the hardtop to the very rear of the boot, and run a bob tail spoiler too.

Had a few days off, been in surgery friday arvo, and monday morning. Got out tuesday midday. Best way to recover is to whip the old grinder out and cut some big holes in the spare bonnet. Slight misjudgement, have had a headache since.
Bit more work to go, but it should be good to see how all this affects the performance of the car. All relevant info for the carbon fibre car.

Relieve the air pressure under the bonnet. If you look at the bonnet at high speed it wiggles around, put vents in, and the bonnet stays still. It is better to vent the air over the car, rather than it going under the car where there are a lot of drag inducing parts.

Very, very keen to see how the bonnet affects things. Have been toying with the idea of modifying the OEM Z33 bonnet to increase cooling, and if if helps with aero, then it's a win win.
Z33, S13 = Same fucking same... Damned POS Datsuns....

You cant go wrong putting vents in your car, as long as you know where the negative pressures are.
I am going to make some big end plates for the rear wing, and put some Dobs of oil on the wing. That will show me if the air is staying attached, how the air is flowing, and how much angle I can set it at. Obviously using driver feedback and lap times too. There should be less lift at the front now. So i will need more rear aero. Can't wait to get to Phillip island now. Should get close to dipping into the 1:54's maybe. I will be happy with a 1:55.5.

Don't need two hands to drive a stock mx5 .... 93.5rwkw of terror under that bonnet.

    Bad habits are bad, mkay

Seriously though, that's the most valuable aspect of the in-car vids. You get to see stuff you might not have been aware of in the heat (or lukewarmness if the MX is that dull) of racing. I know i tend to shift by engine note, when what i should be doing is shift by the shift light that's set for the best shift point. Stuff like that you can check every now and then on a post event video.

Your right, the video is good for things you might not notice, or a bad driving style that others can pick up that you might not know about. I am sure next time out I will be more conscious of it - holding the wheel with both hands.
I always try and get all the sessions on film. I have never had a driving lesson, so any comments on dodgy driving that is picked up by some of the more experienced drivers is always welcome.

Our club had a crack down on the rules and wanted to put me into open class - too much aero or something. So I decided to go back a class to modified. That meant oem hardtop instead of c.f hardtop, no wing, heater and fan, standard intake, etc put in. Basically, only mods now are - coil overs, full exhaust, front sway bar, front and rear lip spoilers and splitter. Had to even get a dyno reading showing under 90rwkws.

Anyway, went to p.I today. Got a 1:55.7. That's about 1 second faster than last time. So looks like tyres are more important than having a wing and lightweight bits. Because the only thing better is the nitto's.

AND - Spoke to the engine builder, he said should be about a month away for the engine dyno. Will be great to have the motor done, then I can finish the c.f car and start setting it up.

Started on the fastback, should get a fair bit done this weekend. I have mounted the roof section, and made the finish line at the rear. Now i have to build the frames.

Got a bit more done. Frame is made, and i have glued and srewed a 10mm sheet of foam on, 5mm below the finish surface. That way i don't have to recess the windows (as they will be in place and i will just fill up to them), and i can trowel on 5mm of filler with a notched trowel, and sand it. I should be able to get a few hours on it tmrow. The side windows are in place, they sit flush with the door glass.

    Cheers.

I scraped back the high spots from the first 2 layers, checking and double checking as i went. Then troweled on 3mm of top coat, tmrow i can do the final fill coat and rough sand if it dries enough.
Last view for today from the top.

Just normal plaster. It works, as long as you put the primer/hi fill on thick enough so you don't wet sand thru it.
