The stock engines have head issues, mostly corrosion but also bhg's mostly due to lack of maintenance / overheating.
I would buy one either with bhg's ready to fix, or with reciepts to say it has been done.

the 3.0 has no torque and relys mostly on revs to get anywhere, not ideal in a 4wd.
The 3.5 is much better, more power, more torque, and a heap better fuel economy.
They are not known to overheat at all under load or hot conditions so that should be no worries.

    Todays efforts, me tired.
Cheers mate. Thanks for the info.

Yeah it will only be used in sand so doesn't need quite as much down low power as aus terrain. the 3.5's are very hard to find here. Also means live axle is not so important and judging by some of your vids the ifs on these seems decent.

Ill prob just throw in a 3000gt engine when it shits itself as I think they are pretty much a straight drop in. From what I have read the the drivetrain is quite strong which is important.

Thanks again for the information. I will prob get a rebadge Hyundai model to avoid the middle easy jap tax. They can be had for around 2-3k aud where as pootroll and cruisers will go for more than double that as a bare shell

Yeh the driveline/chassis are really good. cv's and both diffs are really strong, and people rarely have gearbox problems.
I used to jump my previous one like a dirt bike and never broke it, i think thats why 5 years later i bought another one.
The transfer case has a chain drive, on a really high k's one that has been in 4wd alot of its life you will hear the chain, so remember to test drive in 4wd as well.

Gearbox is good, no problems at all. I really should have a temp gauge on it though, if it dies that will be why. Beach driving seems hard on it in particular.
I was hoping to get 300 out of mine but that may be pushing it
oil temp gauge is a good idea im running one in mine after I fucked my first box

The 5 speeds dont like flat shifting but other then that there pretty sturdy, i drove a high mileage one hard for 3 years and never broke it. Clutches on the other hand dont like high rev side steps but what clutch does?

Yep i broke some gearboxes in my old paj, noone else ever does, but i broke 3. i have a long history of broken gearboxes though, so the reality is that i need to learn how to drive.

Been too busy over the last month to post pics up. Here is a few i took on the way, will get some finished ones tomorrow.

We leave for the cape next thursday morning.

    cargo barrier

Had to modify the battery tray to make room for the oversized compressor

    rear shelf in the making

Found the rest of the teeth from my factory rear locker when i cleaned out the diff housing

arb air leaker fitted and ready to go, was a pretty time consuming thing to fit and set up too.

Axles ready to be swapped as the factory locker ones are a different length.

The missus said she is gonna keep a log, so i asked her to add a few details, fuel consumption will be large.

    CB radio

    new leads

    finished shelf and cargo barrier

    12 volt for fridge

    Fridge tie downs

tow hitch for poly block. I made a plate and welded the hitch to it.

Compressor in the engine bay, had to move the power steering reserve, modify the battery bracket, move washer bottle...should have just bought a normal arb compressor!

And the camper trailer, photos are not great cos its in a tight spot atm,

I have done some serious work to this thing, It used to run 13" tyres, now has 31" 6 stud.

New axle, new drawbar and half chassis. New bed frame, gas bottle holder, rear door, poly block hitch, ect.

It was half up today as the missus was cleaning it.

I will see if i can find some pics of the camper before i started.

So we got back from cape york about a month ago, great trip. Will likely go back again soon. So.. some pics.

    Just about to leave.

At clairview for brekky on the way up, between mackay and rocky.

milaa milaa falls in atherton, met up with my brother jonny at francis creek just above townsville.

Camped at musgrave roadhouse about 250ks from the start of the telgraph track

then telly track the next day, camped 2 ks in at palm creek.

Palm creek entry, turned plenty of people around, we soon realise the majority of people who do this trip have never been offroad before.

    another creek.

Me realising that the beers are running out way too quick!

Jonny got some crap in a bead, and we gave him heaps telling people his landcruiser broke a cv.

The circus tent all setup at another camp.

good swimming spots everywhere, this was halfway along the telly track.

    and some others

This was a muddy climb from canal creek, there was a short chicken track around but that aint much fun.

The famous nolans brook, the pajero and patrol had no trouble, our other mate marty was not as lucky.

The typical dirt road up there, lots of red dirt.

The jardine river ferry, this is only an hour or so from the top,

Loyalty beach camp grounds, near Seisia right at the top, saw crocs, dolphins, and bought more beer in bamaga.

We think this croc was about 5metres

Got heaps of dolphin shots, they were playing there for at least half an hour.

    so cheap!

At the croc tent, me and the missus.

The trek to the tip, about 15 minutes of strolling.

fishing near there, caught spangled emperor, and some dart.

Martin bought these out of the back of a ute off a fella in town, they were actually massive but beside jonny not so much....

    So much ant mound

I'm more interested in how many beers you took?

(I find this an effective way to gauge trips)

    Yep the trip was awesome.

The missus has written it all up, will post it soon. includes fuel ect.

3 cartons of beer, definately not enough..

    Yep, there was a fail,

I would like to thank Marks 4wd Adaptors for their truely quality output shaft that broke on the way home.

I would also like to thank them for making me pay for a new one, even though their product is clearly rubbish.

I was told that i must have been abusing it, perhaps they should come with a "not for offroad use" label.

They also informed me that this was the only one that has ever broken, google says otherwise.

cool, another shorty, mine was once that nice.

The procomps are 15x8 neg 15 offset, also known as aftermarket patrol offset. They do fit really well, enough to hold the car off banks, but not enough to get defects from popo unless they are complete tools.

I will check out that log now.

    You sir win at life!

When I tell my friends here how good life is back in Australia, the stereotype I try to portray is your threads!

Seems to me like, some great fun trips, great nature, bunch of good mates and beers.

Thank you for this feeling of nostalgia...
