The 'FOPAR' Twin Turbo Ford 281ci V8 powered Dodge Daytona

i was told to throw my build of the last 12 months or so up on here as you guys might like it, i am not too far from finishing it. it is a
Full Tube Chassis 1991 Dodge Datona, fibreglass front, steel rear half. 97inch wheelbase
Ford 4.6L 281ci Modular engine (same as the Aussie Boss V8 just less cubes) heads have been ported am still using the factory heads, block and crank.
2 x 1200hp ball bearing, billet wheel Precision Turbo's turbo's courtsy of new sponsor Dragons Lair Motorsports (turbo's coming March 2012)
    Carrillo Rods
    Diamond Pistons
Mark Williams 9'' diff centre w/ 9.5'' 3.89 diff gears
    MW 3.5'' Aluminium tailshaft
2-speed Powerglide built by Norm @ Northmead Auto Centre
10'' Neal Chance bolt together Torque Converter
    Fabwork done by GrooveRyder fabrications
16x16 Mickey Thompson Pro-5 wheels and 33x10.5W tyre

a Motec M800 will be controlling and logging everything, includes a high power CDI8. we are chasing around 1700hp which we should see on around 30-33psi on methanol. the car will be tuned by Shane Tecklenburg via remote tuning from the US (in layman's terms over the internet, he logs onto my computer and has complete tuning access) we will start off slowly as this is the first drag car i will have driven, unless u count the awesomeness of my everyday car which runs 14's@100mph low boost of 15psi, then 22 then 30psi. the ultimate goal if everything clicks together is to run a 6-sec pass @ 200+mph.

    few pics from the build

    1500hp rod vs 2500hp rod

if you're interested there is alot more info and photo's from the build from day 1 onwards at http://fullboost.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=8160

    Awesome car.

What's the licencing situation for drag racing? Do they let you just jump into something like this without a lot of prior experience?

Pretty sure it was the word Performance in PerformanceForums that prompted me to think this car deserved to be shared here.....

u need to do test passes on burnout, 60', 330', 660' and then a full track pass.

Grumpy Rooster thanks mate will be at least another 2 half decent cars to share in the next couple years, my street car (won't be too crazy only 1400-1500hp BF-FG Falcon and a special project we are doing to race in APSA (Australian Pro-Street Association) in the Mod Street Blown category at the moment its looking like it will be a Ford Capri but i may change that to a 1999 Mustang have my eye on a really nice ex-drag radial car from the US the engine would go very nicely in it.

picked up the car yesterday, 90% of the electricals are done. still a few little bits to do but that is all done after the engine is assembled and everything is put back into place. gotta say the electrician (David North he is used to working on 'real' racecars not nuggets like mine ) did a fantastic job i couldn't be happier with the work. we are running 4 mil-spec firewall connectors so everything just pops right off, there are no wires or anything running thru the firewall, makes it alot less messier especially when removing the engine and having to work on it. after we setup where everything goes it will look alot nicer with everything in its place next week we do the engine assembly and get back in to the electricals and get her ready for start-up, have the base tune done and all ready to go. next Friday me and the brosie wouldn't mind hooking in and putting it all in.

these boys have a big job ahead of them, these things have been known to do a bit of damage when you get struck by spark

Bundy, the engine will fit in the Focus just not in the front

Nitephyre, i wish, unfortunately this is the actual drag car. the low 8-sec 160+mph car is the one we actually go to the shops and church in by this time next year we will be getting to the shops and church about a half-second quicker

15min drive out to the track
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYGCT4Np6ag

8 back to back 8-second passes
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CGVBrZwYH4

unfortunately this week we were racing and we didn't get time to go to church but we did get to run a PB of 8.38@164mph. and yes we drove to the track yet again, just changed tyres, plugs and took the exhaust off. the previous runs are with the exhaust

Jason, thanks mate. makes taking the engine out alot easier. we pulled her out in about 10mins the other day. we expect will take about 30mins after everything is disconnected etc.

yeah mate, IQ3 with the M800 should all be good. i couldn't justify spending 3-6 times more on a Motec display when an IQ3 could do pretty much the same. we will be logging in the M800.

Those wires will need to be attached to the shells where they come out, otherwise there is a good chance of them snapping near the pin. Most mil spec connectors will have a tongue or clamp to secure them.

'Project Comalco' as it is now referred to continues (comalco like aluminium cans ) Norm is extremely happy with the engine and build thus far as i'm i, crank spins nice and freely, pistons only have about 13lbs of drag, i'm running a vacuum pump also so, should work out perfectly. it's Norm's first big hi-po aluminium engine he has worked on he has done alot of 1000+hp nitrous etc push rod engines out there but not alloy. he is also starting to love the turbo stuff, he is building a 430ci SBC single turbo which should make around 15-1600hp. actually the owner of that engine that gave mine it's new nickname i decided to go with the 9.5:1 comp pistons these aren't the ones i wanted to use for racing. i wanted these for the street but we got them done anyway. i have Diamond designing a 12:1 set of flat-tops for me, i think with the bigger comp pistons we should see an increase in power of around 5-10% but the 9.5:1 comp will still produce mega-power

starting on the heads this week, titanium retainers are in. the followers/lash adjusters need to be sliced a little bit so we can get all the pre-load correct.

couple pics of the short-block, this is the Teksid block it's the bad boy of all the 4.6L blocks.

the heads are finished, we went with a .015-.020'' preload, that should see us spinning the engine to well on 9000rpm with the hydraulic cams. was hanging to see how it will look, so the heads have been put on. we had one side milled so the tensioner would fit, if the head came off a car it would have been milled but because it was a new head Ford hadn't milled the side of the head off. so we made sure all that fitted. it's starting to look like an engine now, im getting a little excited. i am running the factory oil pump but it has had some modifications a billet steel rotor was put in and it has been ported out and been fully checked over make sure all is good, it is now just as good if not better than the Mellings oil pump at half the price. because of Christmas we won't be able to hook into it until the new year, their is only a day's work left in it, but prefer to do it when we don't have any distractions or rush to get it done. plus i decided to run a Cometic intake manifold gasket and it will be a couple weeks. i was going to have a set laser cut or just silicone it on their. but decided to run the Cometic.

oil pump, billet rotor and ported

needed to run a tube in the water gallery so we can get some water thru the heads as it was grout filled 75%.

no the chassis was made in Aus. we bought it from SA and brought it back to NSW. it has gone thru alot of fabwork from when we bought it, the previous owner wasn't trying to run big numbers, so you could almost say the amount of work we have done it was almost easier to start from scratch all the work was done by GrooveRyder Fabrications www.grooveryder.com.au
