So the latest engine is almost ready to go back in. I've replaced a broken sensor, replaced some of the wiring that was cut and made a new coolant hose. Also gave the crank angle sensor a clean and changed the engine mounts.

Auto trans is off the new motor and manual is bolted on and ready to go. Interestingly the back of the auto engine (the new one) crank is different to the manual engine (the one that was in the car and has died) crank. Spigot bearing still fitted ok and manwell still bolted up fine.
I tried to not disconnect the steering pump, so used my double jointed elbows to disconnect it from the block, then tilt it away, it then proceeded to dump its contents everywhere. Fail. I've also just realised I should have put the belt on before I buttoned up the pump on the new engine. Double Fail. FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU.....

Have decided that young bloke that this engine came from was definitely a bit of a noob, nearly all of the exhaust studs were bent or have the threads stripped. Hoges came to the rescue in getting a broken stud out and we also managed to get the aircon compressor off even with a mangled bolt holding it on. It looks like Nasty will no longer hold the world record for factory stock exhaust studs....

I think I've also been hit in the head 3 times by rocks and soil falling off the crossmember every time I get under this thing.

    engine and gearbox are in.

Need to align the tailshaft rubber donut thing with the triangle thing on the back of the gearbox
find the missing sump plug on the front of the sump
    hook up the wiring loom
    fuel lines
    coolant hoses
tighten up every nut and bolt
    power steering lines and washers
    exhaust

    I think that's it.

    Still left:

    wiring harness in engine bay
    fuel lines
    coolant hoses
    check clutch still works
    power steering check
inlet manifold back together and throttle cable
    intake manifold bracket back on
    starter wiring
    skids

Newer engine was out of an auto 3 series. Had to break apart auto and motor. Young bloke that Nasty bought engine off had rounded off two bolts holding auto on. That was two hours to sort that alone. Swap over all the manual bits like flywheel, crank bolts (different to auto bolts), clutch, change over exhaust studs and remove broken stud, find and replace all the missing bits that the young guy unbolted (he literally undid every single nut or bolt that he could and lost quite a few ... ugh), swap all the ancillaries from old engine onto new engine, drop the one piece exhaust system to get it onto the exhaust studs (because it's flangeless), swap over the broken sensor wiring he cut, etc etc.
Bolting the Power steering pump back on was a nightmare. That took a while because there were specific bolts that had to go into certain locations, took me a while to nut it all out.

Got to love working on bmws
Only z Germans would use three different type of bolts on a gearbag

    Good luck with it

So I am about to put a match to this cunt of a thing.

There is some sort of a pick up on the 3rd spark plug lead that runs around the motor and into the brains of this thing. It has fallen apart and needs replacing. Peninsular BM have told me it is a new part that is $300 ex germany!!!!

Does any one know what the fucking thing does? Some parts of the internet tell me it does nothing and to cut it off and move on with life, I find this hard to believe.

Fucking thing struggles to start, wont idle and back fires (out the exhaust and the intake) a bit at low revs. Sorta sounds like a vacuum leak of some shit. When it is at high revs it sounds good, anywhere else and it's shit.

    cheers.
