    Drag Racing Classes

    Hey Cunts - Seeing as I am new around here, I figured I might be able to contribute something constructive about something I know a bit about.
    Drag Racing. It is just a basic to help people understand who might be new
    to the sport or considering going for their first look. It's fuckin great fun to watch.

    TOP FUEL DRAGSTER - These are the big noisy ones. Top Fuel Eliminator is cars running big block V8 engines with a mixture of nitro/methane fuel, running as quickly as 4.50 seconds for the quarter mile (401m) and getting up to 330 mph (530km/h) from a standing start. The fire show of Top Fuel makes it the feature event at any drag race meeting.



    TOP ALCOHOL - Top Alcohol is a mixture of dragsters and funny cars. Funny cars are short chassis cars with a body that lowers down over the chassis. The funny cars generally have bigger motors and more overdrive of the blower to compensate for being harder to get down the racetrack because of their less aerodynamic shape and the fact that they are heavier than the dragsters. Top Alcohol run on methanol, and are slightly slower than the Top Fuellers, running as quick as 5.50 for the quarter mile and up to 260mph.



    TOP DOORSLAMMER - These cars the the ones that appear most like cars you see on the road. For instance, there are currently 2 new model Monaros, a HQ Monaro and a few Camaros running, as well as 57 Chevs and even Studebakers. They are basically a doored car running the same engine as Top Alcohol, and are much heavier and harder to get down the racetrack. They run into the 5.80 region at best and get up to nearly 250mph over the quarter mile.



    PRO STOCK - The closest racing you are ever going to see is going to be in pro stock. The cars are built evenly. Same chassis, weight and engine capacity. In Australia, a prostock car can have an small block engine up to 400 cubic inches, and must be carburetted and naturally aspirated. The cars without the assistance of blowers, turbos or nitrous are currently knocking down the door of 6 second passes, with the current record being 7.07 at 193mph. These are probably the fastest engines in the world off their own bat cube for cube.



    SUPERCHARGED OUTLAW - Supercharged outlaw is dial-your-own racing of blown cars running as fast as 6.50. Dial your own racing means you choose how fast you are going to go, and try to go as close to that number as possible, so if your car can run 6.92, you might dial in at 6.90, but beware, if you run faster than your dial in, you are disqualified. It is incredibly hard to be consistant when you are running blown cars into the 6s, so Outlaw is somewhat of an art.

    COMPETITION ELIMINATOR - Competition Eliminator is a bracket of twenty six classes catering for “open wheel” vehicles (Dragster, Funny Car and Altered), and supercharged sedan type vehicles running on the ANDRA Class Index handicap system. Vehicles from Top Doorslammer and Top Alcohol may compete in Competition Eliminator where their own brackets are not posted. The Class Index system means that you build a car, and according to which class you build the car to, you are given an index. Unlike 'dial your own', in Index racing you can run under your index, but every time you do, your index drops by half the amount you went under. So if your index is 10.00 and you run 9.00, then your index for the next round will be 9.50, and will drop every time you cut under it, making it harder the further you go in the racing.

    SUPER STOCK ELIMINATOR - Super stock is similar to comp eliminator, but is for bodied cars. V8s must run naturally aspirated, with 2 classes for supercharged six or four and rotary engines. This is known as one of the toughest classes to win.

    SUPER GAS - The dial in is 9.90 for all cars and they must run as close to that number as possible. Makes for very close racing

    SUPER COMPACT - A relatively new class of drag racing, Super Compact is for the import cars running rotaries and turbo 4s and 6s. It is an index based class also.

    MODIFIED ELIMINATOR - Modified Eliminator is a bracket of sixteen classes catering for “open wheel” vehicles (Dragster, Funny Car. Altered and Hot Rod), running on the ANDRA Dial Your Own handicap system. The double letter prefix denotes supercharging is permitted. This may be in the form of a mechanical supercharger or turbocharger, or the addition of nitrous oxide, which is considered to be chemical supercharging. Nitro-methane fuel is not permitted.

    SUPER SEDAN - This is another class that is almost impossible to win. You must run faster than 10.99 to run in Super Sedan, and this class attracts more entrants than almost any class. It is dial your own and is for sedan bodied cars only.

    SUPER STREET - This is as close to street cars as you are going to see at the drags. These cars are 10.99 and slower and super street is dial your own racing and very hard to win.

    JUNIOR DRAGSTER - Junior Dragster Eliminator is a single class bracket catering for half scale dragsters using single cylinder side-valve Briggs and Stratton engines, driven by competitors between the ages of 8 and 16 years using the ANDRA Dial Your Own handicap system over a distance of one eighth of a mile. An overall performance limit of 8.50 seconds is applied, with drivers between the ages of 8 and 10 years inclusive limited to 12.99 seconds.

    I hope that helps with people who have never been out before to understand what you are looking at. Drag racing is great fun to participate in and to just watch.

    Most of the big Group 1 events are over $45 these days. It's a bit steep to be honest. Winternationals is 4 days and well over $100 for all 4

    this ^. drag racing is for fast cars, roundy round is for fast drivers...

    i still go to calder alot though lol. $45 was a bit steep for the last event though...

    I dunno, dragracing is not my cup of tea, but there is definitely some skill involved. Can't imagine how the guys stay calm doing 6secs on the bikes!

    I've only been to one drag event and it was pretty boring. The first 30mins were cool, but after that it was a little boring. Worst of all was those junior ones though... I honestly think they run them so people look forward to the rest of the event.

New people to drag racing are confused when they see dragsters going down the track and not blowing up.

Studebakers are the most often spotted brand of car on Aussie roads. They are basically a doored car running the same engine as Top Alcohol, and are much heavier, a little slower and almost entirely irelevant to anyone with an engine made in the last 40 years. The quickest legal doorslammer in the world is a turbo car yet in backwards-arse Australia, they're not allowed. Booo!



    PRO STOCK - The closest racing you are ever going to see is going to be in pro stock but it's not the racing that people go to see. Pro Stock, also known as the hairdresser's class, is the domain of the throbbing same'o'sexual and despite the race car haircuts and sleeve tatts is anything but manly. Dated technology and less than 3hp/ci is the domain of the mincer and proclaimed no louder than Pro Stock.




    SUPER GAS - Possibly the only drag racing class in existence where hamstringing your big dollar engine for the majority of the time is what's 'cool'. A class for maths nerds who are too poor (or haven't got their hairdresser's ticket) to race Pro Stock.

    SUPER COMPACT - A relatively new class of drag racing, Super Compact is for the import cars running rotaries and turbo 4s and 6s. The bastard child of a failed ANDRA Sport Compact series and the desire for traditional Group 2 racers to "asshole those new boys back to Japjap land".

    MODIFIED ELIMINATOR - Modified Eliminator bills itself as the family-friendly, everyone loves everyone, happiness, daisies and rainbow bullshit class of drag racing. Modified racers are all murderers and kitten punchers.

    SUPER SEDAN - A class for 9 and 10 sec orange toranas with small block chevs, one carb and a powerglide. And that's it.

    SUPER STREET - See Super sedan and add some slow.

    JUNIOR DRAGSTER - Fucking. Yawn. End.

    I hope that helps with people who have never been out before to understand what you are looking at. Drag racing is great fun to participate in and to just watch.

    They dont really encourage turbo V8s anywhere in there.
    Correct me if Im wrong but that would be the fastest growing type of car in drag racing now wouldnt it ?

    Super compact ? I dunno Ive never heard it said like that , will ask American friends if they refer to it like that.
