    few more

son will be putting all the clamps on and hooking the electrics back up tomorrow, and welding the diff while I go and race in a hillclimb
just need a couple of 16mm hose tails for turbo drain hose (have about 2 metres of teflon braided hose laying around that I had given to me for RC pattern aircraft exhaust joiners years ago) and fit oil feed line, then take to mates for dump pipe.

there are a lot of parts laying around here for my E30 race car that I could have "borrowed" and made life easier, but that doesn't sit well with the repeatable by anyone theme of the challenge, the only exception to that is I may put the locked diff out of the race car in it for the run rather than welding the diff up in this one. not much progress is going to happen in next few weeks, have to go interstate for work, then next weekend I have to get racecar ready for following weekend, it has stuffed rear wheel bearings etc, then race following weekend, then interstate for the week, then holidays, so should have it running and ready to scare Heathcote scrutineers then

dont blow through the airflow meter, went through this years ago with my old m10, blew the shit out of it, then spent months gluing and screwing it back together every week till i wised up.

correct, this motor only has to see the challenge out, then a 2.7 with 325i head and electrics goes in (with the turbo) note in last photo, oil filter can't be removed/replaced with manifold on, I have a 90* mount, but didn't want to add it to cost with this motor

*edit unless next challenge is lap time of race circuit, this should be most suitable if engine is still in one piece

I would have gone to the trouble of pulling the sump myself

Its only alloy swarf, and that's what the filter is for isn't it? And its alot better than the pine needles that would have got in if he took the sump off. Plus he would have to drain the oil then!

bleeding edge ghetto style would have been welding/brazing the fitting onto the sump while it's still full of oil.

When I did the turbo conversion on my V6 VN I took the sump off in the dirt. Drilled the hole, welded the bung and dropped it back on with a squirt of silastic. Ghetto, but safe.

It might be just alloy swarf but the first place it hits is the oil pump and it will damage the pump rotors. The oil filter collects only so much. Once it becomes clogged the oil flow is reduced.

I would have at least covered the tap in grease to catch MOST of the swarf. Then drained the oil, filled the sump with DIESEL, drain again, re-fill with correct grade oil.

You can be ghetto and still do things properly.

Are you kidding! Alloy sump swarf can't damage a sintered metal oil pump impellor. It can only get stuck to it, and thus increase the tolerences, and thus improve efficiency and oil pressure. Also, pine needle sap is a proven viscosity enhancer oil aditive.

it can however score the alloy pump body, but IMHO the damage it will cause with that amount of debris is fuck all. I wouldn't worry either.
