    FT-86 to be named FR-S...

Holiday Auto mag in Japan reckons the FT-86 will be named "FR-S" at its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in December. Also they have a leaked image of the emblem which will appear on the engine cover, the numbers "86" between flat 4 conrods and pistons where the crank would be. The FR-S naming would be in line with the LFA and IS F, also the restyling of the front end will be more in line with current models just released like the Vitz and Ractis, not completely but subtle cues to give it more of a family connection than the previous FT-86 concept had. Donk is still the FB20 with D4-S and 200ps (some say as low as 180ps) with 200Nm or torque. Not sure how heavy it'll be but the NA version is more for the AE86 purists so won't be quick at all, but there's also the G's turbo version which will probably get the most attention.

In North America it'll be sold as a Scion and the turbo kit will be available as a TRD option, not as a complete car from G's (G's complete will be only available in Japan). Pricing starts at 2,000,000 yen which they reckon Toyota is completely adamant about sticking to as a base price as they've been saying all along. There's also rumours of a 4-door but there's not been much talk of it in any certain terms but for now, restyled FT-86 to debut in December at the TMS for 2,000,000 yen base price.

The pic below is just CG art, but the engine cover emblem is on the money apparently...

    2,000,000 / 85 = $23,500aud

    $23,500aud + (Toyota Aus. markup) =

    $60,000

    GREAT SUCCESS

Yep... sad. It's not the type of car you can wack a ridiculous price on either but I know they will.

What models does 2'million yen put it under and over in the Toyota lineup in the Japanese market?

Any equivalents to the Aussie market?

The Blade and Mark X would come in above the FT-86 and both start at around 2,300,000 yen, and under would be the Allion, Vitz, Ractis... so many models cross paths with pricing it's hard to say where it would sit as opposed to the Aussie line up consisting of a sedan, hatch, 27 SUV shite wagons and a ute.

That's a damned good description of an AE86, though (except call it 86kW & 150Nm).

I dunno, earlier generations of Gen-Y driftkiddies are getting old enough that they're able to afford it. Toyota may play the same games as Honda seem to be playing with the Civic hatch here, whack a massive price on it initially & then cut it by 25% when you've gouged the early-adopters.

what hatches have more than 120kW? pretty sure most econshitboxes are still 100-115kW. Its not like AE86s were powerhouses even back in the day, especially AUSDM.

its obviously going after the mx5 market, so i suspect it will be priced similarly.

yup, i think cunts here forget that a spankers MX5 is 40k+ so people WILL pay for a sports coupe, as long as it does its job well enough.

But they aren't.... sales of the MX5 have been dwindling (down 16% in 2010 alone) even with the adoption of an electric hardtop model.

The next MX5 will apparently be <1000kg powered by a 1.6L engine with approx 100kW. Just what the buying public has been asking for apparently.

New Celica? I'd say Toyota Australia will price this in line with the 370Z.

I don't think the turbo will make it here. Just look at the SW20 MR2 when it was sold here.

Rezz - whats the difference between the FR-S estimated price and what a 370Z is in Japan?

And most fwd POS... As long as the 86 comes in at a decent weight i.e <1250 then i'd go for it over any of the above.

If they make it more than 1300kg and less than 180Hp (quite likely being Toyota) you probably won't be able to tell it's RWD.

I'm all for it. Bring it in at $40k and 200hp, under 1300kg, and I'll be all over it.

Mind you, target weight for the next MX5 is <1000kg. If they still have 120 odd kW it will own this thing.

Well they say 2,000,000 yen for the FR-S, which by the time you option it, say 700,000 yen for options and on roads, that's 2,700,000 (AUD 32,623). Which for a base model, with navi, some weather shields for the windows, metallic/pearl paint and ETC is a pretty good deal.

    Same thing for a 370Z/Fairlady Z Version S (6MT) would be 4,533,900 (AUD 54,771).

Same thing for an MX-5 would be 2,871,625 (AUD 34,687).

The 370Z is in another league and isn't comparable IMO. Like has been said the MX-5 is the nearest competition and on price it seems Toyota could sell the FR-S a fraction cheaper than it. But I say that being in Japan looking at the situation here... in Australia who knows, just expect to get treated like an idiot and reamed.
