I had another look at it this morning. We fitted a dial gauge to it to determine which way it was bent, and then tried to "persuade" it back by lifting against it with a hydraulic bottle jack and massaging it with a BFH. No go!

I also discovered that the left engine mount was sheared, presumably from when the jack slipped.

There's no way around it but to take the engine out now. Oh well.

Fuck me... That is pretty random. It must have come down hard.. You can bolt a blower drive on those things that takes 300hp to drive and it doesn't bend them..

I had a bit of a win today! I was prepared to take the motor out today and start getting ready to replace the crank. We decided to have a go at straightening the snout again as we felt we had nothing to lose. We took the bonnet and water pump off so we could get good access straight down on the snout, and with the aid of a dial gauge and about 90 minutes of massaging we managed to get it to 0.1 mm run out.

Win!! I was a very happy boy driving it home today. Time for a beer.

hate to think how you massaged it? and how the bearings liked it.

    what type of crank? cast?

We used a large alloy block and a dead blow hammer. It's a stock cast crank. Oil pressure is fine. If it does a bearing then I'm no worse off and I'll replace the crank as I originally thought I would have to do.

The old original battery was about 6 years old and was only 460 CCA. It never turned the starter crisply and then decided to turn up its toes.

I picked up an Optima Red Top with 800 CCA.

    All tucked away....

    What a difference it makes!

I had a redtop in the Mazda, ... would crank for 15 mins before dying.

With the high comp dato, it lasts about 1 min

Btw, the car sounds rather awesome

Great news re getting it back near true mate.

How much out was it to begin with on the dial gauge? I'm not metalurgist but would be making sure that what you've done won't hurt it and risk a balancer flying off and through something....

It started off at 1.5 mm. It doesn't sound like much but you it looked terrible when watching the balancer.

My mechanical engineer mate informs me that the crank is nodular iron. Apparently the carbon content is in little spheres that makes the metal more ductile. (I think I got that right!)

Well, malleable actually but they are intrinsically related. Its also less brittle, and higher tensile strength. The graphite is in spheres instead of fissures.

If you ever get a chance, have a look at a few metals under a microscope, very small differences in composition and phase make for significant differences in crystalline structure.

    /CSH

Just be careful, because with a component that has already been deformed like that, with heat and stress, could suffer from creep.

It's been a while since I did an update. I finally got around to sorting out the new wheels for it and I'm pretty happy how it turned out. I ended up going with 17" Torque Thrust D copies. Tyres are Dunlop Sport01's 225/45 17 up front and 245/45 17 at the back.

I clicked off a few photos this afternoon of it.

The past owner is buying the old Centreline wheels back off me for $800. He's over in California as I write this buying himself a few muscle cars, so he's going to bring back my new Vintage Air AC kit in his container for me.
