Hi all long time lurker first time poster.

Got maybe an odd question for you all, So as i haven't built a car before yet i have worked on cars since forever as a hobby.

What tool/Equipment would you guys think are mandatory and or optional for a home workshop/garage for ones first build ?

Atm i can think of some very basic ones

* Tool box/s
* Spanner sets metric/imperial
* Socket sets metric/imperial
* Screwdrivers n such
* Jacks and stands

What else would you guys add to this list as mandatory and or optional.

Lots of rags and hand-cleaner.

Normal hammer, BFO hammer, breaker bars, angle grinder (we've got 2, one for grinding discs, one for cutting discs), drill, vice and I love my 1.5m bit of 70x35mm pine prying/bashing bar

Once you go a bit further....drill press, bench grinder, engine crane, gas mig welder, cut off saw, hydraulic press....

My contribution: good work light.
I've got a 60 LED rechargeable work light*, made it's money back many times over. Nothing like being able to see while you work.

*just a $40 cheapie from Supercheap, couple years old now, still going strong. Battery life is excellent, can last all day no worries.

i've got a $30 eveready cap lamp because of the poor lighting in my shed. it works a treat. you don't have to move the light around - it follows your line of sight perfectly.

Heaps of good idea's

Forgot engine stand and engine hoist.

As first project would be thinking basic mechanical maybe engine swap for more fasts.

Still deciding on what to get as the project car also.

I was actually thinking of safety from the start. Buy wheel ramps etc now so you don't end up using bricks and shit when you need them. Buy a good jack now so you don't end up using a scissor jack.

containers and jars etc to store nuts and bolts that you remove and a texta to label them with.

a camera can come in handy for taking pics of how things look and are bolted/wired up. pen and paper is alway handy/

A multi meter for sorting out electrical problem.

I use a large magnet and paper towel for cleaning up swarf etc if its a ferrous metal

jiff, to clean the laundry sink after you fill it with kero and use it as a parts washer.

extra long socket extension bar for hard to reach bellhousing bolts

big long piece of pipe to put over breaker bars for leverage

mega fuck off large set of multigrips

and $20 jaycar wire stripper/crimper

I've got a 48" stilson and I haven't yet found anything useful to do with it.

My most surprisingly useful tool is the Dremel that my mum bought me. It sat on the shelf for a few months after I got it but then one day I had a bolt that was hanging out a bit too far. Used the little grinding disk to trim it off and I've found a heap of other little jobs to use it for since.

I can't stand using shitty vices, buy a decent one.

Most tools are ok from Stanley or Kingchrome, some tools you can skimp on if you're not using them much like a soldering iron, others that you will use a lot you may as well buy decent like spanners and sockets.

just undertake your project and buy the tools as you need them. have a read through the service manual of the car you're modifying (or a manual from a similar car). depending on the tasks you want to do the manual will recommend tools to buy. if it is an expensive tool or one that you don't think you'll use much then ask someone more experienced than you if the tool is necessary.

Will be something to work on to get out of the house and mainly built for 1/4 work
