Fit is fine. I just weld from the centre out which is essentially a vertical up weld with the electrode pointing down. On the next one i will try welding from the outside into the middle, which would mean that weld direction is the same as electrode direction.

No mitre setup, just paper templates printed out of the computer. Cut along lines with angle grinder and dress up with linisher.

Material is ASTM A106-B seamless pipe.

I finished a pair of collectors last night and tried welding the inside of the merge the other direction but it wasnt any easier. I ended up doing the second one as per the normal method and found it slightly neater. I guess it will have to do.

Commotion, nice welding. Can you give us more information/instruction on these paper templates? What program are you using to flatten the pipes?

I just draft it up in solidwork. Get the layout i want, pipe size, merge angle, flange size etc. Trim the individual pipes then slit them and unfold them like a sheet metal part.

Some amazing work in here guys. I have no skillz but admire yours from afar.

Couple of pics of my builders stuff. Some more for show of course. Labour intensive by the looks of it. Both bikes he's made mostly from scratch. Not the motors of course.
Guess what motor/car is in the 1st pic and you win the Internet.

I have been a bit slack lately but did manage to mount a wastegate off a turbine housing over the weekend. I also managed to machine another cast inlet down, just needs to be blasted ready for another custom inlet.

Progress on custom inlet manifold. I have not done much aluminium lately and its shows, plus its 5mm thick so probably getting close to the limit of my machine but it should do the trick.

Can you use helium/argon for ac and dc?

I paid 190 for my last g bottle of argon plus the 190 bottle rental a year makes it expensive learning to weld
