Concept only: Dual Quad Rotor Motor

two quad rotor motors in parallel powering a common crank.

mirror image of each other, rotating in opposite directions.

    feeding from a common plenum.

    like a V8, but rotary.

    would/could it work?

There's not enough crude oil in Saudi Arabia to power this motor

Do you reckon it would hold with 8 bolt mains?

I believe this is the biggest problem you face.

how are you going to time the rotors to not break your common crank?
what forces is this thing going to generate (and is it going to break engine mounts)?
    whats with the clutches?

EDIT - blue thing is the intake, but whats stopping your gears from losing their teeth when something happens?

are you just trying to make us flame you?

Wouldn't the inlets have to be on the outside with a bunch of spark plugs in the middle?

no, this is a semi serious discussion. its an idea i had, it may or may not work, but if you guys can be constructive about it maybe someone who is actually able to, might be able to put one together if only out of curiosity.

Mount the engines at 35 degree angles from the "flywheel"

Hey could you just keep joining rotor housings together to make one really long rotary?
You'd need to make special eccentric shafts and so on.

yea, i have heard about someone doing that.. i thought by keeping it relatively short, it would/could fit in the majority of engine bays.

I was kinda thinking something along the lines of having 4x3rotors all connected to a massive common turbo with each unit powering a hydraulic pump that powers a motor on the wheels. Awesome 4x4 rx7 drifters FE!

How wide is this engine bay you are thinking of? Don't forget the space in the middle for spark plugs and leads plus the space on the sides for the exhaust.

If you are serious, go to a tractor pull and have a look at how they do multiple motor setups.

    Common crank ?

Looks to me each "bank " has its own crank that are driving a gearset that feed a single output shaft.

    fuck rotards.

Get yourself a pair of gas turbines and gearbox from an old Adelaide class frigate.

    Good for 30,000kw atw.

gearbox is a bit heavy though, you might need to strengthen the gearbox crossmember.

... and a 50 litre fuel tank would only last a few seconds.

    Thats what I was thinking.

even 8 stacked would be far more compact, simple and easier to build than the abortion in the pic. They are much wider than they are thick. 8 rotors stacked should fit in most 6cyl bays

Would sound fair tough me thinks

I think your over complicating it all, what should be done is 2 matrix's of 4 quad rotors with each quad firing as a single cylinder and set them up as eight individual cylinders configured in a V formation, timing chain might be a bit cunty though.

What cams would you run in these rotors?
