Keep the Y engine, they go for ever and seem to work fine in the old shitboxes. Put an EFI manifold and ecu on it. Otherwise 3RZ makes the most sense from a toyota POV. Mootec V6 will probably fit and perform the best as far as conversions go. They climb cliffs on the idle control.

I like the 2jzge idea. Then change to a gte once restrictions are lifted.

Mate had a ge in his lux and it went quite well.

Took two of us two weekends to take out the old one and fit the new one in a 2wd so a 4wd should be easier.
Needs more power now though, looking at a nitrous kit for cheap fasts.

so, anyone have a 86-90 efi Tarago lying around that I can scab the EFI gear off?

Also, would the 4y rebuild kits on ebay that say "forklift 4y" work in this thing? can get a full kit for $350 but not sure if its the same engine or parts?

are you seriously considering injecting the 4y? if you want to throw cash at a big pile of shit, get yourself a rottweiler.

you should still be able to get one of the brand new 'forklift' motors if you were interested.. the kit would be for LPG - but how/if that differs from the 'normal' one nfi.

if you are going down this path - thought about just looking for a second hand motor? - when i got rid of mine (which was fine) i got a case of beer for the starter motor.

$350 in parts plus the efi shit ($100?) is cheaper than every other option ive found. Really don't want to overcapitalise on the old bus. That all said, apparently "S" series donks bolt up to the gearbox (3s and 5s) which ill look into as they would be abit more common than old tarago shit.

4k - a bit much perhaps but the rubber alone would be a fair proportion of that amount.

still keen on the 22re idea, just need to find one.

if its not rusty, thats pretty decent...

now its not running I'd gladly offer him a grand :P

the 4y is just such a pus-box.. i wouldn't bother putting injection on it.. there's probably very little to be gained.

If thats the case you should buy a 3sgte while you are here. Can get them for 1400aed with turbo, loom, intercooler and ecu.

Just put it in your suitcase on the way home.....

Didn't see that post Vet180 - I ended up filling my trunk with Sheeshas and hand tools. Shame we couldn't meet up, 2 days / month off base meant not much sight seeing time Glad to be outta the oven tho

On topic, we have located a 3RZ from a mates IFS 'Lux for a pretty awesome price. It has a suspect blown head gasket (and was pulled to swap in a mootec - crazy) and comes with radiator, loom, ecu, bellhousing, and the engine is fully dressed. The plan will be to pull the head, get it checked for warpage and cleaned (intake ports are coked up from the EGR shit) then reassemble and slot it in. Haltech and GT30 when my brother can afford to throw 5 speeds at it

I've been reading a few threads on marlincrawler.com and pirate4x4.com but still have a few questions as they talk about Tacomas alot and I don't know much about Hiluxs anyway.

    - Which gearbox would be behind the POS 4Y? G or W series?
    - What gearbox do I want so the 3RZ bolts up? and if we have the wrong one, will the correct one bolt up to the rest of the truck?
    - Anyone know a source for engine mount brackets?
    - Any common issues with the 3RZ itself that I should be looking for, and things to look for when I do the head gasket?

That's it for now, once we get the engine I'll have a few more questions and might make a build thread for the truck itself.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

4y should have a g series i think. Hiluxs never came with w series, only passenger cars.

You want the r151 box. Or you maaaay even be able to get a bellhousing to fit the rz to the g?

You will most likely have to make engine brackets, or try your local 4x4 wrecker. for the engine side toyota might sell them? Or grab some from the same wrecker.

3RZs are normally quite reliable. Get the head crack and softness tested, throw some stem seals at it and check for valve/guide wear.

for a bellhousing, if the one you have doesn't fit you could probably use one from a hiace. they had 2/3rz donks in them and a g series gearbag. really late 90's to mid 00's i reckon.

Found this site for mounts. And they say this for the gearbox fitting: "This 16 valve DOHC motor will bolt to the factory "G" and "W" series transmissions when using the Tacoma's W59 bell-housing, clutch, clutch slave, clutch fork, and flywheel."

So I'm wondering if the bellhousing that comes with the 3RZ (out of a IFS 'Lux) will be the one I want or not? What came with a W59?

Not sure about the 4x4 models, all the later 4by hiluxs ive seen have been r151s. Maybe some came with the g/w? However the 2wd luxs and hiaces came with the g series box, so should be the ones your after.

If your not sure, the build plates tells everything
