Hi all, any experience with the cheap ebay full length racks on offer?
Seems under $500 you can pickup a full lenght good 'looking' rack.. Much cheaper than ARB etc. But are they any good or going to self destruct after first use?

But many similar ones out there. ARB knock offs looks like.
That looks solid as. I think that type of product you can definitely make a case for buying the cheaper yumcha style brands. $350 for a full length alloy roof basket is an absolute steal.
If you were really concerned is there any way you could inspect prior? Or send someone local to the seller maybe. As long as the thing isn't made out of swizzle sticks I can't see how you could end up having any worries.
What type of car is it for mate?? Ive got a 3/4 length gutter mounted rack i wanna get rid of. Its old ARB, early 90's from memory

It's for an 80 series.. Was really looking at full length though. What is the length of the 3/4 rack?
Cheers

As it is steel I'd say it will be fine in terms of strength and durability.
But I'd buy an alloy rack, but not a cheap one. For outback touring etc. I'd stay from cheap alloy anything. Likely to shit itself (fatigue) on corrugations.

Wondering how hard it would be to knock one up myself.. Some bent 50mm pipe for the outside and a mesh floor. Then attach to some rhino racks. Flat would be good don't need sides so much.
Is this for your Pathfinder? Roof load limit is probably 100kg. Large steel rack could weigh what? 20kg? Leaving you 80kg load capacity. An 80kg load taking up a full length rack would not be very dense.

That 100kg limit I always thought was for a pair of roof bars. IE if you added a 3rd bar your limit goes upto 150kg? Also the 3/4 and full length roof cages generally attach to the guttering. Fairly sure this gives them a much firmer mount thus the weight is not such an issue (from the caving the roof in point of view) We've all seen the loads those Troopies head up Fraser with on the roof, i'd say 200kg at the very least. All comes down to your particular car, where the CG sits and how likely it feels like tipping over without anything up there as to how much you load it.
The roof load limit is listed in the owner's manual and is the total weight that can be carried. Small/medium 4wds are usually about 100kg and Landcruisers/Patrols are usually 200kg. The weight can only be carried in the factory designated way ie. via the rain gutters or channels.

I would have to measure it mate. Its in the roof of our garage at our place (with tenants in it), its full steel though. Takes 2 blokes to lift onto my 80 series.Ive had 4 blokes worth of shit in the back and on the roof for a 5 day trip away, no worries.
You can have the rack for $150 if you want it.....
