    Land Rover Discovery 300TDI

Heres my new bus, I bought it from my dad with a suspect BHG and flogged suspension.

Abit of money and time later and it now has:
-New design cylinder head with MLS gasket
    -New hoses/belts/fluids
    -Unblocked Radiator
-Upgrade timing belt kit (how LR let engines out of the factory with the setup they had is beyond me)
-Silicon turbo hoses (not in the country yet)

    Suspension/body wise:
    -2in Ironman lift kit (cheap)
-All suspension bushes replaced apart from rear A link - will do this along with the upper ball joint later.
    -new steering damper
    -new steering rod ends
    -oem size BFG AT's
-somesort of ARB looking bull bar, cheap off gumtree

Driven it to work this week and it has gone well, will need atleast one of the diffs rebuilt as there is abit of slack in the drivtrain (280000kms) might do a locker of somesort at the same time.

In the future ill give it abit more go with a center muffler removal, boost and fuel tweak (fitting egt, boost and water gauges) and I want to try water injection. I have a spare set of steels that will recieve 265/75/16 buckshots or something cheap. Other stuff like lights/radio/tints will happen when i can be bothered.

    Cheers,
    Jeff

Replace that coolant reservoir (they split along the seam) and fit a low coolant sensor as well. Otherwise all your hard work will come undone.

Check out AULRO.com for loads of info and many Land Rover nutters.

Famous last words... the Disco is 17 years old/280000kms... the coolant tank hasn't split yet.

    $5000--$6000 maximum

Jeff's has only done 280000 in 17 years [ we have had it 13+ years ]...was originally a Demonstration vehicle in WA so probably did 10 Canning Stock Route trips before I got it.

Only ever had new clutch, rear crank seal, 2 heads, but as Jeff said rear diff needs attention.

    For a 2.5litre TDi @ 2.3 tonnes, they do a good job.

AC needs regas. heater core needs replacing...full dash out to do job...$700..$800 labour

    Read fucking slow.

    I have had a couple of disco's/rangies.

If you are looking for one you are better spending the extra coin on a well maintained one than one that has been neglected

As gutless as the 300tdi is, they are a good little engine if you don't let them get hot and change the timing belt regularly.
Just don't be in a hurry to get anywhere

They are definately an enthusiasts car, but I think they are a rewarding drive when working

Its fast enough for a daily, I've got the bike if I'm late for work.

Ive got a few parts/ideas lined up to make it abit more capable in a few months time

If you think the TDI is slow, try the 2.0 MPI!

Yes, in some areas it is.

I just like to be able to pull out and accelerate to overtake when you are stuck behind someone doing 10kmh under the limit.

A 300tdi struggles with that unless you get a really long run up and has very little chance of overtaking anything while towing.

They are definitely a rewarding car when working, my 300tdi Rangie had lockers, 75mm lift and 32's. An exhaust and some extra boost helped but it was still painful doing long distances on single lane roads. Not many overtaking lanes are long enough for a 300tdi but on dual lane highway's it was bearable.

Interestingly it actually performed better with the taller tyres on it and fuel economy stayed pretty much the same.

Its fine on the HWY, just drive it like its powered by a rubberband - wind it up for long enough and you might make the gap
