    Project 250R

Got myself a new toy to play around with, I originally bought a KTM 150sx to this years season on but after not been as race fit as I thought I was I got rid of it.

    Thread here.

    http://www.performanceforums.com/for...ing&highlight=

Anyway, when I bought the 150, it was only one of 3 in NSW at the time (who knows what ktm are thinking) I put it on bikesales and it sold in no time only losing out a few hundred bucks, lesson learned.

My mate who is racing this years MX nationals called me and said he was picking up his new Honda for the upcoming season and while he was there maybe get a hookup on a runout '11 model CRF250R.

After a bit of negotiating, came up with a deal too good to miss and we were on our merry way.

Stock the bikes are alright but really restricted in the exhaust and a bit soft in the suspension for a guy my weight. Prepped the bike by stripping it down, regreasing headstock, linkage and giving the nut's and bolts a good going over, because they were crate bikes there was quite a bit to do before they were ready to ride.

Did a bit of shopping both locally and overseas, the bike has an impressive parts list that I'm slowly fitting to the bike as I get time.

    Yoshimura RS4 full system
    Braking batfly 270mm oversized disc/bracket
    braided brake lines
Twin Air screen delete kit and CNC'd cage
    Renthal Twinwall bars (Windham/Reed bend)
    Renthal Superthin Grips
    Renthal 49T rear sprocket
    D.I.D Gold Xring chain
    Hardline hourmeter/xtech bracket
RHK bling kit (engine plugs, rimlock, valvecaps, axle blocks, brake line clamp, front/rear brake res caps)
Sunline 4 way flex levers (brake and clutch)
    Fastway Oversized pegs
Ringmaster Backgrounds and numbers - in the mail
HRC Honda Racing Shroud graphic/Trim Kit.
    Rims anodized Black
    HRC tune tool - http://world.honda.com/HRC/products/...0_settingtool/
    Dunlop MX51 front & rear

So far it's looking pretty trick.

    further plans are:

Retune ECU, have a downloaded US map in it now but it's not very good.
    Extrude hone the head
    Suspension revalved (priority)

Today I got busy installing the Yoshi and the front brake.

Both were very easy, the pipe lined up so perfectly! Amazing quality. Sounds fuckin tough too.

Brake was also quite easy, stock rotor is 240mm, this is 270mm. So it includes a nicely machined bracket to transfer the mounts and brake pad pins. Good stuff.

    Looks like a good thing.

I know what you mean about the Yoshi pipe, I have their case savers and the quality/fit was crazy good. They actually came with 3 different length bolts for one side, anyone else would have supplied one length as it still would have worked but the ones they supplied ensured all three had the same thread depth. Pretty cool.
    Knee down and shit.

Yeah this pipe came with replacement bolts, nice anodized spacers and lined up millimeter perfect. It's fun working on bikes when everything lines up nice. But a mongrel when things don't quite fit.

I use those same grips and grip glue... Renthals FTW. Have their sprockets too and would have bought their clip ons but they don't have the 3 piece drsign of the Woodcraft's which means you can't remove them without removing the top triple.

Went for a rip on Sunday, exhaust made a huge difference all across the rev range, 2nd gear corners become 3rd etc, Sounds so crisp too, but very loud.

Today I installed the Windham bend Renthal Bars and grips, such a pain in the ass to put the grips on without an air compressor. Tie wired them on so they aint going anywhere.

New Xtech bar clamps too as these are larger diameter.

Cafe racer (notice the stock steering dampner)

    Much better

Been mucking around with the tune tool a bit, there is limited (ie none) info for tuning for Aussie 98 octane fuel, Is there any correlation between US 93 and our 98? 93 is considered their "Premium" fuel. I have lots of info to start with but without a wideband I'm sort of guessing.

got bored last night so put the stickers on, took way longer than expected. Needed my mate to help with heatgun to stretch stickers out.

And this morning put it all back together, I reckon it looks awesome. Very happy with the final result.

Just need to fit my Renthal Sprocket/Gold chain and Blue radiator hoses.

With all the rain recently it's really gotten nice and green/thick.

Had first race of the year on Sat, was all going well till.... lol

Raced 250 Clubman, huge grid, 35 riders.

First moto, Ok start got to about 8th and held on till last lap then made a small mistake in a deep rut and stalled, luckily kicked over first go, came in 10th.

Second moto, much better start, felt like the front end didn't touch the ground till 4th gear. Top 5 into first corner and coming up the hill there is a ski jump with a big divot where everyone was landing in the soft dirt, I got baulked by a guy who fishtailed in front of me. This is the last thing I remember. Apparently according to my mate jumped the ski jump only to land front wheel first into the ditch and it just through me over the bars like a ragdoll, I slammed my head hard into the ground and then the bike flipped and landed on me, I was out for about 10 seconds or so, luckily no one ran over me.

It really shook me up, helmet is a throwaway, neckbrace snapped and possibly saved me from a life in a wheelchair. Got me thinking.

Bike is fucked, bent left radiator, bent bars, ripped grips, front disk is warped (so spewing about this) and new stickers on the shrouds all fucked up.

Came away with minor concussion and a bruised bladder lol, hurts to piss and sneeze.

bike on the way to been fixed, radiator dropped off to be straightened for a slab, I fixed the disk in a vice somehow, bar mount bolt was bent so ordered new one and should arrive tomorrow. Got off relatively lightly.

To celebrate entered in Picton Amcross this Sunday, I just don't learn

    yeah I'm alright

Raced on Sunday at Picton had fun but not much luck on the bike.

40 rider lineup, was so gnarly having 40 guys come into the first corner, needless to say mayhem every first lap.

Track was a natural terrain grasstrack, no jumps but lots of off cambered corners and rises/falls, was good fun but the track got torn up with so many races over the day.

First practice, track was so wet, caused mayhem out there, hero's trying to ride 10/10th in practice getting loose and crashing, I ended up stalling in a pileup and couldn't restart the bike for some reason, called it quits and returned to pits. Found out when back at the tent the ECU was having a spaz with the light on the killswitch blinking.... lucky I bought the laptop and reflashed with standard map, that fixed it up.

First moto got a good gate pick from the lucky dip, took close to the far right where the grass still was intact and avoided the carnage of first corner, top 5 start but got passed by a few guys been a bit tentative in the offcamber stuff, finished about 8th.

2nd moto chose a more straight line to first corner hoping to snag a better start to keep up front but alas a shithouse jump, wheelspun over the gate and got karate kicked by the cunt next to me, went down early in the race because they wet the fuck out of it for no good reason, just slipped completely sideways like a retard coming down a small hill, got back on and just cruised around to finish 5th last or something.

3rd moto big thunderstorm came over, was near dark but no rain, track was rough but tacky now. I got decent start around top 10 but again wasn't aggressive enough and got passed late in the race, thought I rode my best this race but still only good enough for top 15 I think.

Not sure on my overall result, but wouldn't be too flash. Had fun and more importantly no trips to hospo

Good day practicing today, some solid 20 min moto's trying to keep speed constant. Had some fun banging bars with my mate on his 450. On the straights his thing just walks away! so much grunt.

No crashes, nothing broke, was a nice change.

bit of an update on this slug

2 different mates had their bikes flogged within a day of each other, so have no been riding a lot as been a bit of a loner and no one to ride with.

I had a good tax return so thought I'd give the bike a 15hr christmas present.

Stage 2 hotcams cam and springs - http://www.hotcamsinc.com/ProductInfo.aspx?item_id=3352

Axis motorsport ECU tune to suit

Moto Tassinari Air4orce airbox and velocity stack - http://www.mototassinari.com/air4orce

Suspension revalved, resprung and fork tubes kashima coated by Factory Spec - http://www.factoryspec.com.au/Factory_Spec/Welcome.html

I was going to put the cam in myself but was advised would only cost $80 to be put in by axis so let them get their hands dirty rather than me struggling with it. Piston was inspected and deemed perfect. Cam went in, springs installed and valve clearances set.

With the yoshi it made 36.6rwhp, and after the engine mods and tune 39.4hp so not a bad increase for an already highly strung engine.

Looking forward to seeing how it goes and more importantly handles on the weekend.

Racing starts up next week again, dusted off some cobwebs at the practice track yesterday. Speed was OK (still typical clubman) but fitness was pathetic, 2 laps and I was toast, no Idea how I'm gonna do 5 laps.

I am seriously regretting selling my 250r, so light and small and flawless crisp efi If honda made a X version based on this generation model I would be the first to buy one

Also I've got a brand new set of acerbis plastics in black left over if you want them cheap

You seem to think you can restore that classic car in your garage by drinking beer while staring at it.

I'm so stoked on this bike, just needs a bit more power off the bottom, clutch can only take so much fanning lol. If you lived in Vic you would be nuts not to rec rego a "R" model with some enduro suspension. Would be the ultimate bike.

I'll keep the plastics in mind, black is a bit too "metal mulisha" for me
