Surge housing plate 'thing' - keep it or ditch it?

I bought a friends turbo falcon which is fitted with a noname turbo (and the engine is broken).

The compressor housing looks like this:

    And when I remove these:

    It looks like this:

What is the consensus on this ring thingo? More efficient to keep it or lose it?

    ED Falcon taxi + 14psi = 424rwhp.

ED Falcon taxi + 424rwhp + epic rapage at Powercruise = 'custom' #1 rod. Bugger.

well without it, it exposes the surge thingy mabobs, if it surged then remove the plate, if no keep it, afaik the surge holes actually leak slight amount of boost so if you can cover them up it will be (slightly) more effeiceint.
more then happy to stand corrected though

I tend to agree with E-Z.

leave on foir efficiency, if surges then remove and lose a small amount of efficiency but no more surge

ps: fuck it off no name turbos are gay

The are just used to quiet down the whistle afaik. I always take them off when I run holsets. It wont change the efficiency at all, there is still a large gap around the bottom even when installed.

Well if that thing is supposed to make it quieter then it's not doing a very good job, it's noisy as fuck.

Wow there's a big gap between the compressor profile and housing what's going on there.

Pulling it off will drop the efficiency/the max flow rate a little bit and also slow the response down, but on the other hand it will reduce the tendency to surge.

However, these covers are more designed for indusrial setups to extend life of the chra, make the surge line a more gentle proposition and widen the envelope, hence you see them more on the bigger garretts (and knock offs) and lots of the holsets.

Short answer, in an auto set up, keep it on to maximise the response of the snail (in a theroretical sense), however if you do pull it off it's unlikely you will even notice any real world difference in performance.

    :-)
