    Mining Communications Technician Pay

So I went for an interview for a Mining Communications Technician job this week.

This will involve %20 workshop and %80 field work above + underground work.

Hours will be 10-12hours a day 5 days a week.

Not sure if the pay rates are anything special though, normal rate $34 hour, on-site rate $39 hour with all meals/accomodation provided or paid for.

No penalty rates at all, does this seem normal?

No penalty rates is not unusual. Check to see if an award applies.

is it because of the standard thought:
mining = easy money and lots of it?

is that casual(contract) or permanent part time?

ie. is there annual leave etc. being accrued? vehicle included? what sort of comms work are we talking about?

$34 an hour is an ordinary figure for a Radio Tech IMHO.

It's a permanent position, no company car. I drive to office then take work car from there.

I need to clarify if there is an award in place.

Will be installing leaky feeder and RFID systems mostly.

Lots of driving to mine sites mostly in NSW and working under ground.

I have no specific mining comms experience (avionics comms background) so they will be training me.

It's better than my casual rate surveying assistant job, so would probably take it if offered.

    Is this out near Mudgee?

The pay scale in NSW is a lot lower than say Queensland or Northern WA. The fact that you CAN live near a civilisation lowers the pay scale a lot. Monday to Friday sounds like a nice gig. If you want more coin your doing 12 hour shifts, 2 on 2 off or greater and living out in the middle of nowhere. For example my role pays six times more a fortnight than I'm on in Perth, yet I'd be doing 12 to 16 hour days, six weeks on seven days off.

Weigh up your cost of living where your going and be aware that you can get a pay renegonition if you prove to be worth having on site.

Not sure if it's really all that relevant but over here in the West sited Comms techs are on ~$55-60hr. I moved out of comms a while back now and moved into HD Auto sparky as the jobs are more plentiful and the coin is even better.

As said above though, depends if you want to go home every night, the above rates are for FIFO.

ok.. i've made the following assumptions

    80% field, 20% workshop

11 hours per day, 5 days per week

you are accruing and using annual leave.

46 weeks a year worked + annual leave (allowed 4 weeks @ 40 hours a week) - the other two weeks of the year aren't counted to allow for the fact that you might get sick etc.

you will work all public holidays with no penalty rates

the rates that you mentioned are exclusive of super

With all that considered, per year you have...

495 hours in the workshop at $34/hr which = $17204

1980 hours in the field at $39/hr which = $78936

160 hours on leave which = $5440 (you accrue this even if you don't take it)

Therefore an equivalent annual income of $101580 + super.

Lets pretend for a second that there isn't as much work as expected, and you only do 9 hours a day, but everything else stays the same, thats $84100 + super

so... what would you get NOT working at the mines? and how much could you get if you were at a more remote mining site?
