Daily: misfire (pic of plugs shows which cyl)

    hey guys

    i have a 4cyl TE magna as a shitter. it's a single cam 4G thing.

anyway it's developed a misfire, none of the plugs looked any different so i put in a new set and took it for a drive for 20 mins & this was the result.

Any insights into general condition (plugs 1-3) and most particularly the reason that cyl 4 looks different.. fair to say that it's the one misfiring although i suppose it could always be all three of the other cylinders, just intermittently.

a little rough on idle & off idle, very light load (eg. take off down hill) it's fine but taking off on a flat bit or uphill, or any real load, it misses. high rpm free-rev it seems to clear out.

I would first be looking at leads, distributor cap or rotor button. Had a similar problem on my old 626 turned out to be the leads

Is there a consensus on that being the case?

Might grab a fuel filter and see if there's any improvement..

Yeah the white deposits look lean. Does the fuel come into the rail at the #4 end? This might explain the 1 neutral looking plug. The filter makes sense as does the pump but its more expensive / difficult to replace.

So it has a miss on idle? Have you tried narrowing down which cylinder isnt firing properly? Check the leads, cap and rotor like others have said. Changing fuel filter may help but its rare to have a missfire unless its completely blocked.

quite often you will get that result if a cylinder is missfiring, because the misfiring cylinder will be throwing fuel into the exhaust. the oxys think the engines running rich, so the computer leans out all cylinders, hence 1-3 look lean.

like someone else said. check cap, rotor, leads etc. swap plugs in cylinders to see if the problem follows the plug or stays with the cylinder. do a comp test.

    Needs more fuel heater

I had a 4gxx magna and it did the same thing but only at idle, never fixed it though the leads did like to come off the dizzy when under load sometimes.

Clean the air flow meter!@ Wd40 and a paint brush worked for mine but apparently there is a specialised AFM cleaning sprey available from supercheap that doesn't leave a residue.

    Might be lucky.

It's a magna and you work in insurance. Burn it and laugh all the way to the dealers to buy a less shit car.

Years of poor financial decisions see a Magna as a necessity rather than a choice

Trying to read the plugs is futile when it is misfiring.

Try swapping leads, clean the wire in the afm (not with wd 40 for fuck's sakes, use contact cleaner or acetone or something), wiggle all the plugs around.
