I spent more time yesterday sorting thru the wiring harness -joy. also pulled the alternator off the 16V motor - the only thing holding it on was the belt tension adjusting bolt! eek!

yeah memories are the motivation for this one.
Did a tiny bit over the w/end- labelling connectors and bits of loom, tracing wiring, and rust converting and painting the batter tray - woo exciting.
Would have got more done but my 6 week old son was not a happy camper and instead of sleeping so I could work on the car, ( with baby monitor close by) he decided that being awake and screaming for hours was more fun!

did some more yesterday arvo, until I got the shits with it.. and drank wine and ate cheese instead![]()
swapped the alterator and A/C compressor off the 16 v onto the 20 V block- easy as. Interestingly the 20V alternator was held on by the correct # of bolts, but to make sure I added a spring washer and some locktite..
I then spent about 30 minutes looking for the 16V oil pressure sender which i'd put 'somewhere safe' so I could swap it for the 20 v one... Still haven't found it..
then I decided it was time to strip non essentials out of the 20V loom, and mark things up as I went. I misplaced my Sharpie about 40 times in an area barely bigger than a standard pallet which gave me the shits.
Then I discovered that I'm missing a 12 pin ECU plug from the loom.This is kinda important - cos it's the one that gives power to the ECU ( perm and switched), the speedo input and the O2 sensor..
I'm keeping going with the striping while I souce a plug, hopefully with some wires attached, so I don't have to source pins and crap as well. ... apparently its common that this plug is missing from all but 1/2 cuts..but is a common plug on mid 90's toyotas.

so i take it the plugs are really small type pins to suit a silvertop ecu? i assumed because you were talking bout speed sensors i thought you would need an old AE82 twinky plug.. bugger.

yeah the pins are smaller than the twinkie ones- thanks for trying anyway mate, appreciate it..
todays little effort was to remove the pressed in bushes from the front control arms... factory originals... I don't have a press at home, so you've gotta do it 'the hard way'- takes about 10 minutes/side max, just cruising through it..
here is how I do it...
take 1 control arm with pressed in rubber bush- factory 1987 styleeee..
cut the end off with an angle grinder.. so the bush can leave the control arm easily..
edo popped by to take a few photos for me...
notice that the bush has two metal sleeves... this is kinda helpful cos it gives you more solid material to hit...
get a smallish drill bit you don't care about . drill through the bush as many times as you can...
looks the same, but has lots of holes between the two metal sleeves.

take an old cheap crappy impact socket of appropriate diameter to match up with the inner sleeve to use as a drift, and a BHF (BHF not shown, but I recommend using one ~ 1.5 kg-2 kg)..
belt a few times..
insert random joke about my tool deeply penetrating a black bush...
once you're balls deep (so to speak)
grab a bigger crappy old impact socket and your BFH
coupla wacks.. and with a little clean up, to get rid of a few bits of rubber still stuck, we're done.
the bits of bush that have been destroyed by my tool
took longer afterwards to clean up 25 years of dirt, balljoint and CV grease off the control arms than it did to do this..![]()

brand new ECU plug and pigtails on teh way.. Tweak'd performance in the US FTW... (not particularly cheap. but in this case, easy wins out!)

well after a busy few weeks of non- car related stuff (being a parent mainly), and a weekend of cleaning the shed, I had a minor day or two of doubt about working on cars, and being over car projects, given my meagre skills..
still having a clean organised shed made me feel better about things, so I took the control arms that I'd put new bushes into & dodgily painted and wacked them in the car...
for MrMoparmans benefit- the balljoints off ebay aren't quite a direct fit.... the studs on the B/J are 12 mm, rather than 10 or so of the stock ones.. so out with the drill to drill the control arm holes out to 12 mm.
then discover the supplied flanged nut fouls on the edge of the control arm, so had to find a suitable non flanged nut & spring washer. Torqued the living crap out of everything, and installed.
fitted new tie rods, and sway bar bushes as well for good measure.
Also have removed the 16V sump ( with lovely oil cooler return) and cleaned it up... just have to take the 20 V sump off and swap it over, check the 20V clutch and then install.

What's wrong with the 20V alternator?
If you end up scrapping the big port I'm looking for an inlet side valve cover.
Boycott temporary street circuits and support permanent racetracks for club level motorsport and driver training.
nothing wrong with the 20 V alt, the plugs on the 20V and the 16 V looms are different, so rather than fuck with changing plugs on the 16 V loom to suit the 20 V alt, it was easier spend 5 minutes changing the alternator![]()
the way I'm planning on doing the wiring is to retain the 16 V fuse box with starter, battery and charging circuits, as well as the oil and water temp bizzo, and then splice in the 20 V injector and ignition wiring, seems to be the easiest way to go from what I've read and people seem to have done. There are about 10 wires that need mod'ing including the speedo input to the ECU from the dash.
I'm sure i'll fuck it up and it'll turn over but won't fire and it'll take me 11ty hours to work out what i've done wrong!![]()

so my progress has been slow and slowed by family committments-was at the farm all long weekend), but I just bought a pair of SV21 camery brake calipers for 40 dollars which will allow me to run the 258 x 22 mm AE93 Gti front discs. I have NFI why cunts think AE93 brake stuff is worth 300 dollars...
getting brakedirect to quote me on discs as we speak.
hoping to get into the shed this w/end to swap sumps, but have perhaps tomorrow afternoon as the only free time this weekend- lunches and dinners and parent stuff.
