    Wow.

Have you seen what an actual spot welder looks like?

It normally takes quite an incredible amount of pressure to hold the panels together to get them to weld.

I am interested to see how it goes- might make me look like a dick I guess.

The only one I've ever used was back in high school and it had two huge arms that clamped down on the sheets, just like you say, to hold them together to pass a heap of current through.
It didn't look anything like the one in that ebay advert.

I cant see how a weld with an electrode from one side will do that.

We have a few "single" sided ones at work, like $10k plus ones. Basically you attach a earth clamp to the job and push the gun onto the panel and pull the trigger.... But they are a lot more powerful then the one pictured and only used where you can't get behind the work area to use the clamp/double sided ones. I don't have much confidence in the ones we have at work and would rather mig the area and only use it to give the original "look".

i bought a heap of vise grip c clamps to pull it all together. i'm not sure about how strong or good the spot welds will be either. i'm certainly well positioned to find out ! sucker, how good is just drilling holes in the top piece then migging them together ? does it make it harder to get apart again ?

as for you looking like a dick muz, you do a good enough job all by yourself.

i had a bit of a go at this. the steel i used was galvanised which made it gay. the plan is to cut up an old panel, clean it up and try it on that. what is a good test for spot weld strength ? as long as it can't be pulled apart easily it's ok ?

Try to separate the 2 sheets with a cold chisel/BFH...weld should tear through the top sheet if its welded with good penetration.

Yer MIG plug weld would probably be stronger, just doesn't look original, but I doubt this things spot welds would look too original either?

The internals are spot welded to the inner door frame before the outer skin is attached.

did a bit with this today. cleaned up a couple of pieces of ae82 bootlid. clamped them together and went to town. first few were shit. didn't stick at all. here is some pics of some better ones.

    top side

    bottom side

top of bottom piece after separating.

    bottom of top piece.

it took some hammer and cold chisel action to get them apart. not as much as i would have liked though. i'll give it another go and if it's still gay i'll just plug weld with the mig.

Got hotter then i thought it would. Looks like it is melting the top material and pushing it out of the way, resulting in only a thin bit joined to the lower piece.

i reckon that is tied up with what muz was talking about. i'm not able to get the pressure needed to press the metal together properly. it seems to work ok for what it is. i've literally done about 15 spot welds with it. higher amperage and moving quicker seems to work best. another thing is i have an inverter welder. i might try out an ac one and see if it's better. for the radiator support and skirt on the falcon i reckon i'll plug weld with the mig.

What about somehow integrating gas shielding aswell? Welds look ' dirty' like a gasless mig.
