    Importing old car from US - gimme the facts but im not in any particular rush

    So, I have been perving on many US car sites to find something interesting to buy and (once again) I think I have found it but have to move fast to secure it.

    So - whats the go in terms of importing a car from the US.

    As I understand it I have to : buy it, apply to bring the car here, get approved, get it here and pay customs duty, go rego it cos I am a sick cunt with an old car that has less rules on it? Do I have to get the cunt roadworthied etc etc?

    Help a nigger out as I have no idea on this shit just know I want to get this car from the US. It is modified (has a s/c 350) but want to know what are the extra costs? Obviously I have to buy it, pay shipping but what is duty through customs, what other costs/checks does it need before rego.

    School me up cunts and if I am quick enough I can snap the cunt up!

    chomp - $20k - it is going to cost me $3500US to have it shipped, car is $15k US. Based on current rates = $17.8 to get it here before customs and other costs.

    don't rush is first piece of advice, lots of shiney cars come from the states that are full of rust / bog, the standard of panel work from there is shit house compared to here.

    Most importers tend to be dodgy cunts, treat them as such. Don't buy cars from them, always independently find / check cars over. It will cost you about 3-3.5k to bring a car over, lock them in on price. It costs them about a grand for the container, so it will pay to shop around to get the margin down.

    People are having issues bringing non-standard cars in at the moment, not sure if that has gotten easier

    FWIW I spent a fair bit of time dealing with Geezers when I was chasing my Camaro - went into the showroom / spoke to them a lot - they have been around a while and run a very nice looking and professional shop.

    My advice would be to work out what you want and then ask someone like Matt from Shermatt to find you a clean one. Alternatively do what I did and buy one locally. You will potentially pay more but you have the advantages of :
    - getting to inspect it yourself
    - drive it yourself to see if you like it
    - possibly be already registered in Qld like mine was
    - you know what the cost will be (no surprises with customs, shipping, AQIS etc)
