    NSW racing clubs / information

I would like to get into racing, would start off with clubs that wont need full cages, can use street or semi slicks. I just dont know if you can do that or what? But mainly track racing.

So what club in NSW would be good to join, do about 6 races a year.

Time Attack/Supersprints or Wheel to wheel racing? What kind of car do you have/want to get?

Something to start off with a street evo7 with a few mods. Wheel to wheel is the goal, but would that require a cage? Mostly track maybe road sprints, but crashing into a tree is not high on the list. I may buy a dedicated race car later on.

If you want to do wheel to wheel racing you really need a cage, and you'd be silly not to. The other item strongly recommended is a neck brace.

irace is probably the cheapest option to get into. Otherwise for CAMS look at Improved Production, though you'll need to run a restrictor on your turbo intake which I'm sure won't impress. Or possibly Sport Sedans.

Are there clubs that to timed, so fastest around the track? do you have a list of clubs to join? are they the supersprints? I should probably look at a dedicated track car.

Yep supersprints might be the go. Personally I'd still recommend at least a half cage and a neck brace. Any speed event can be dangerous if you get it a little wrong.

Best bet gives CAMS a ring and have a chat. They'll point you in the right direction.

iRace looks like a good start. Will call CAMS too. Thanks. Do you know of the clubs details that run the supersprints?

Michael, there are well over a dozen Sydney-based clubs that run organised sprint meetings. Most people chose a club that either specialises in their type of car or is based in their area.

There are at least 4 organised CAMS sprint series in NSW:
Combined Sports Car Association - for British sports car clubs like MG, Lotus, Jaguar and Morgan but a lot of non-marque cars compete
Interclub - Alfa, HSV, Subaru, WRX, Southern Sporting, Nissan Sports Car Club
    State Series - All clubs
    BMW vs Porsche

IIRC the MX5 club runs there own sprints. Skylines Aust also has a couple of days against Rotary Enthusiasts NSW.

Not sure if the EVO club is CAMS affiliated but I only see them run track days.

Have a look at some of the Wakefield and Eastern Creek results on Natsoft to get an idea of the organised sprints and the cars that are currently running.
If you dig a hole and it is in the wrong place, digging it deeper isn't going to help.

May I sugest you google the Southern Sporting Car Club for what you may be looking for.
They do lots of supersprints, driver days etc all timed. They do this inconjuction with
HSV,WRX and Alfa clubs. There are a few evos in this club also a few competitors run in
the MRA series and iRACE series so they would give you a insight on what is required for you
to compete. The Streets run evos in this.
I will be doing a supersprint with them at Wakefied on Sat 19th May if you get going now
you could enter only thing you need is a helmet, fire extinguisher, blue triangle and a cams
L2S licence get this done now and your in.
I will be in a evo if you need anymore info PM me.

What turbosurfer said about the SSCC. I'm in the WRX club and have run in the interclub series for years. In our club we have people in everything from the state supersprint championship, various tarmac events, 6 hour regularity events, dirt rallying, time attack, improved production up to Aussie racecars and the Australian GT championship.

Best thing to do is get down to Wakefield on the 19 May, have a look at how things run and talk to the SSCC blokes there.

Forget your iRace and MRA stuff for now. Do your sprints first and worry about the proper racing later, I would suggest not until next year at the earliest. SSCC are a good bunch of guys, and the interclub sprints are good fun (I used to run them way backin the day).

As I understand it, non-marque cars can compete if the owner is a member of one of the organising clubs. I have competed in quite a few CSCA events in my Datsun 1600 as I am a member of the MG Car Club.

    Quite good, well organised series.

Supersprints are a really good starting point - timed laps, cars start in pairs with a reasonable gap between each pair and only a certain number of cars on the track at one time so you are (theoretically) fairly evenly spaced and racing the clock rather than other cars.

Agree completely. Do supersprints (or even regularity) until you stop getting noticeably quicker from one meeting to the next. I've been mucking around in sprints /track days for close to 6 years and still regularly better my previous best time. I intended to move to "real" door-to-door racing after a year or so, but I'm still loving the sprints.

Yeah definitely don't jump straight into door-to-door racing until you've got a fair few sprints under your belt and you're comfortable driving by yourself.

Yep I think i need to buy a proper race car first. I dont want to damage my brothers car, and hes not overly keen on spending bulk cash. I have had a re think this arvo and we will just try and better our times in his car, but getting traffic at wakefield is something we have to get used to.

Thanks for the advice on the racing too, i'll put that behind me and concentrate on sprints. Now to look for a track car.

MX5 is hard to beat. If I had bought one I would have saved a fortune.
