VL Turbo CAS / Triggering problem ???

Housemate has a VL turbo he bought a few months ago, was running ok, on what I believe is a stock ecu, or period replacement(?) of similar type, haven't had a good dig around in it. Progressive(?) fail, will no longer start.

Anyway, he started to have trouble with it on a long drive, missing, carrying on, high fuel use, glowing cat (we dropped teh exhaust and the cat looked ok surprisingly).

Had a play with the timing light, no 1 seems to be firing consistently when cranking, but I threw the light on the coil wire and it is not consistent. I ha not done each cylinder but it looks like there is only spark on half of them at this stage. I'm not familiar with the RB cas but I was under the impression if the cas was going to fail it would work or it wouldn't, not for half the cylinders?

    Any takers?

They are funny things, I've seen them behave erratically and miss and stop when hot.

Vls are simple things and basically the only things that stop them dead is the cas.

The aca cas isn't a too bad a replacement for a std one.

    This.

Also, the VL computer can give you some diagnostic codes for failed or failing sensors (including the CAS) if you have a look in a manual or search on www.calaisturbo.com.au for the full instructions/list.

Turbo and NA have different brand dissy's too. One is hitachi and one is mitsubishi. I think turbo has mitsubishi and they are generally better but all will swallow water and die sooner or later.

The optical sensor has to accurately read 360 tiny slots and another slot for TDC, it doesn't take much to fuck them up. That and they are 25years old and fucked.

Cheers gents. I figured replacement would be the go.

He has another to throw in it, although I believe it may be from an atmo engine.

Atmo and turbo exactly the same. Mits fitted to skyline, hitachi fitted to the vl.

Also check the cas plug, the boots rip and water gets in causing white or green corrosion.

    I miss my vlt

Replacing the whole dissy may not be any better if the cas is suspect but if you have one maybe try.

Also be careful you put it in exactly the same spot as the original, usually taking note of the rotor button placement is the easiest way.

A new aca cas is about $80.
