    Cyl Head rebuild (refresh) quote

    hey guys

got a 12v I6 m20 (bmw) head that i am looking to get checked out/assembled, i bought it from usa with "45k miles" for bugger all and got free shipping so it worked out OK.

Anyway i got a quote from a shop for $517 that did the following

    acid clean
    inspect hardness
    Surface
cut seats face valves wash and check tiop heights
    wash & assemble head

Does that sound right? and they would check the guides too when doing that yeah?

    Thanks,

It's probably ok for a non trade customer. I usually pay around $400 for a pair of v8 heads. Maybe a little bit of bmw tax in it. Depends how much labour is involved. Do they have to remove cams or anything? Are they a known good shop or just a random choice?

Also does it really need a full service if it's only got 45000 on it? Could just get it skimmed/pressure tested and bolt it on

    45k miles

no cam or anything in the head just guides. 45k miles so thats like 70k kms.

got a slight gouge in the head from shipping and lots of det marks in one cylinder.

i fucking lost the valves+spings+all the other bits, so i am buying near new ones off a bloke

So assuming valves and springs are fine what would i want to get done?

Yeah if all that shit is from a different head just get a head service done. Get them to pressure test and check the head for straightness first to make sure it's not cracked or severely warped

that quote sounds fine, that's about what I would expect, maybe a touch more

I just had a datto L6 head done completely - reseated valves, cleaned everything, milled, new lash pads, regrind cam, everything re-assembled ready for installation was about 800. Lots of extra costs in mine though
