GU III ST Patrol 4.8. Learn me.

Long story but i am thinking about getting a 4.8 Patrol Auto Dual Fuel etc etc.

Looks good in pix online but will go see it soon i hope.

I believe they are a pretty bulletproof engine and i know the GU Diffs are strong but what about the 5 speed auto?
Any other pros and cons? Woeful economy but the BBQ gas helps out there.

    Here Tis.

You're right on the economy front. You'll need a small Arab nation at your beckon call to keep it fuelled, even with the BBQ gas.

I remember a mate had one and did have a few issues with the auto, but I never got specifics. Engines also aren't entirely bulletproof. They can have electrical issues, again specifics I'm not sure on.

    Cliffs:
    - Bulletproof diffs
    - Drink like your old man at Christmas
    - Autos can have issues
    - Despite the big donk and decent grunt they aren't remotely quick.
    - Out of the box off-road ability is second to none.

I couldn't bring myself to pay that much for a 10 year old car and would pay twice as much for a 3 year old one.

I thought they went rather well actually.

They loooove the juice. check the price of gas in your area before you commit. where i live its actually dearer to run on gas than it is on petrol.

Also the 4.8s chew heads on gas heaps worse than the 4.5 or 4.2. The older motors had adjustable rockers and were piss easy to adjust. the 4.8s are a downright cunt, no one ever adjusts them, so they burn valves.

Besides the 4.2 turbo diesel apparently they are the pick of the patrols.

Mate had one. Did good skids even with 33's on it

I wouldn't want to pay for fuel though. Especially if using it on the beach

I had one in manual with all the gear including winch, sliders, lights, bars, 35s, 4 inch lift, f + r lockers etc. Loved it.

On the freeway it use to drink over 20 L per 100km at 120 km/h. The weight, extra bits and 35s didn't help. At 100 km/h it was much more efficient. Was awesome in the sand, huge rooster tails flying along in second. Could have used a bit more power for soft dune climbing... but what car doesn't need more power.

I only had it for 14 months, but didn't break a thing despite putting the headlights underwater in a mud pit (and getting stuck) and about 10 pretty serious off road sessions.

    Would buy again. A++

Cheers Dodgy good to hear from a former owner.
I couldnt afford to run the fucker if not on LPG!
An online test said they got combined 17 liters per 100.

Havent seen to many manuals for sale.

My one just turned up at work one day and I impulse bought it. Paid $27,700 in 2008 and sold it for $29,000 14 months later. Had not even considered owning a 4x4 but I thought it was cool (and knew the price was right) so I just bought it! I had a work car at the time so just used it on weekends, therefore fuel was not an issue.

17 litres per 100 would be about on the money. I could use less around town just using the torque and short shifting at 2000 rpm. With such a huge truck I didn't feel the need to race it around town, but when pushed, it was a nice smooth engine all the way up to red line. The fact that you can drive it in RWD only was a big plus for me. Made for fun times.

The one in your pic also has the steel rear bar. More weight but a good offroad feature.

Check where the gas tank has been put. If it's hanging down under the back like many 4wd's with aftermarket conversions it's no better offroad than a commodore.

A brilliant vehicle, provided you're not planning on going anywhere that fuel is in short supply

Good point. Although mine was jacked up, I found the exit angle to be less that what I would have expected. The tow bar on mine took a few good hits. With a lpg tank it would be rubbish.
