Ok guys, I've got a set of Simmons V4's that I've taken apart and I want to strip paint off the centres.
Currently, they have a coat of spray can black on them which is easily coming off, and the original factory green paint underneath.
The idea at this stage is to assemble them with stripped, unpainted aluminium centres, possibly with a clear coat over it if its required to prevent oxidisation etc etc (i.e. I want a matte silver in the centre, and chrome lips).
Two questions:
1. What is the cheapest way to get rid of the paint without damage to the metal (paint stripper or sandblast)?
2. What clear coats do people recommend (or are they more or less all the same) keeping in mind I don't have any special compressor type tools (do clear coat spray cans exist)?
I was a little concerned that sand blasting will damage the aluminium. Also, I have no idea if putting clear coat on the aluminium will introduce a shine to it (ideally, I want the centers as matte as possible).
Any suggestions to help a noob out?
