Bet they did it to make the rear sump fit behind the cross member.

Neat trick, as they have a front-sump.
And it's probably easier to move the sump & oil pick-up around rather than dig big holes in the firewall.

Bloody hell, so much empty space in that engine bay compared to the M20 eta motor in mine. Even without a radiator in the F20C conversion picture.

I keep thinking conversions or some way of doing a low boost setup on the eta. I should really get off my arse and do something about it.

Beams 3S has a very elastic power delivery as std, that's what the BEAMS bit means, dual variable cam timing, clutched e throttle and all that. Makes what would be a peaky monster into a linear torque monster that can pull a fat arse XE10 chassis along. E30 is a couple of hundred kg lighter than an Altezza.

F20C would be great but they cost a bomb, beams are dirtcheap for what you get. Try building your own 2l NA engine to get 210hp and probably 7l/100km.

Al, in your opinion, having worked on Clayto's Krautwagen, do you think a 3RZ and a slusher would fit in to the bay, trans tunnel, and clear the steering box of much gheyness?

If so, what do you reckon the sort of cost would be for such a conversion?

    Serious question.

Mine's okay - You've been in it - but there's a big lag between when you put your foot down and when it goes sometimes. It hasn't got the speed sensor hooked up yet so maybe that would make a big difference.

Yeah, i know that Bill I just used your quote as you bought up the 3RZ as an option. It would probably suit the W201 well as a package to drive everyday.

I would have no doubt about Al's skills, but i would want to know if it actually fits the car without modifying tunnels/firewalls/chopping up body bits for fitting inter-ma-coolers etc.

I should tell you to fuck off and get your own thread cunt, but you redeemed yourself when you mentioned chopping shit. I also have zero interest in some butchered shit box. Either the motor fits or it doesn't. I'd want the finished product to look like it left the factory like that. Turbo 351's conversions come to mind.

    Chipper want an auto because:

Up yours homo lover....i'll post where I want, what I want, that's how I roll.....

Clayto, auto because daily and lazy driver.

I still think it is worth considerting the BEAMS Cal, it'd liven the little sucker up, but fittment for me would be a critical point.

Cal this from a guy who bought larger diameter rims and wanted soft side wall tyres so it didnt ride rough says it all really !

Chipper you need a 70's Cadillac, no power , auto and rides smooth !!!

Back on track Cal do the BEAMS, E30 M3 without the BMW expence. Keep the car nice and who gives a shit about resale as some young punk will buy it if / when you sell it as it will be something that bit different.

Cal, the whole reason I suggest the Beams engine is that I am pretty confident it will fit with no requirement to move the brake booster or cut anything. Been there done that with sketchy's car and didn't enjoy it. The engine itself has the correct sump layout and the gearbox will fit the tunnel no probs. I don't even think the shifter will be an issue. If I say I can do it I can.

Chipper, A 3RZ could fit but they are not the greatest engine around. If you want lazy torque then a 1JZ VVT auto is a no brainer. They are about $2500 for a halfcut and there's no shortage of them.

This is gone. Any other places to try?

I'll call you tomorrow for a chat.

Edit: Found a guy in Melbourne doing the same conversion. This is what he said about the engine mount: "I have retained the stock hollow alloy Beams mount plates from the block to stock Altezza engine mounts that bolt to custom plates welded to the original E30 crossmember. I dont actually have a template of this im affraid." http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...=207453&page=8

    Fits nice.

There is a few random engines on ebay. I found halfcuts at Rolin imports($3600, 91312km) and BMI($4500 41000km).

That $2500 cut must have had a few km on it, seemed underpriced comparitively.

Yeah that would be right, as soon as I get my head around this the available front cuts are $1K - $2K dearer.

You can see in the pic they have the front sump sitting ontop of the crossmember nearly. Not the best example but I would say it easily fits in there without the need for firewall mods.

The 3SGE has also been done and as Al pointed out, needs no mods to firewall, booster etc.

Good find that one. Looks fairly straight forward conversion too. So is it booked in with Al yet? Im wondering which will come first BEAMS conversion or Baby !!

Screw this 4cyl crap. Put a ls1 & t56 in it. Best bang for buck. With a cam you would be 260rwkw all day comfortable, and I'm sure you could do the whole thing less then 10k. Engines are so cheap these days
