    Dash Cam Recommendations?

So after enough close calls with many SS driving bogans and awesome Asian drivers I feel it's time to get a good dash cam to record their retarded behaviour. Nothing overly flashy, but something with a time / date and possibly GPS would be good.

    What's the goodness?

    Cheers

Comes down to how much you want to spend as much as anything else... tons on ebay from $30 to several hundred

do you want a single cam or front & rear facing? HD/non-HD? etc, etc

Front / rear would be good. I give no fark for HD. As long as I can make out the plate of Missus Chong smacking into the side of me, I'll be happy with that camera.

if you want to be able to reliably read plates you are going to need HD (im factoring in the negative effect of cheap China-spec lenses and less than perfect conditions such as glare and angle here - we got a $30 Ebay one in at work to test, even though it worked fine and was "HD", you wouldve been very lucky to be able to read someone's plate from it)

the ones i was looking at were basically little black boxes that mount under teh dash/seat and have inputs for a couple of cameras that can be stuck anywhere on teh car and typically use removable SD cards - i'll see if i have the link

Most "HD" are just BS. I've yet to see a proper HD that outperforms a cheap point and shoot camera like my Canon IXUS75 (5+ y.o camera). Unfortunately no one has created a hack to the firmware to allow it to cycle record and auto power up with the charger on those things or else I would have used them ages ago.

Very interested in how the Blackvue goes long term, i read a lot of bad reports about them overheating & failing, which put me off buying one. Maybe it's been resolved in the new ones?

    EDIT

Here is one of the reviews that talks a lot about the Blackvue overheating problems

It's likely to be a few weeks sorry mate, but if you can hang on to, say, around the end of the month we should be close.

Unfortunately its a present for someone so it has to happen.
Any chance you can let me know your findings so far on models? (PM is fine)

I wonder if police attending accident scenes are checking for dash cam fitment and asking for memory cards?

Could be a bit of a double ended sword, if you so happened to make a mistake and to be in the wrong in an incident the evidence will be used against you.

Really happy with it, the video quality is excellent and it works quite happily all by itself. The GPS seems to work well, it takes about 90 seconds to lock-on. The only thing I didn't like was that it takes between 30 - 45 seconds for it to start recording.
It's got motion and g-sensing so it'll record if your car gets hit in the car park while you're away. It's quite small and the power cord length is very generous. It used a micro SD card, you can get 64 gb ones which will record for about ~15 hours or so I think. I didn't use the software but it looked pretty easy to use in the instruction book.

I recently installed a pair of Finevu CR500HD's in the C63
    REALLY impressed.

    - record constantly
    - parking mode .....with motion activation.
    - G force activation whilst on the go , or in parking mode.
    - optional GPS
    - can manually trigger 1920 x 1080 jpgs

The only thing that was a little annoying was the G force activation on the go.
Every time I gave it a decent stab, or hit a decent bump it would activate both cameras.
The 2 lots of beeping made it sound like the inside of a taxi
    ....easily defeated in setup.

    I will post some videos....
