It has steel springs, no air suspension and has 18in wheels (previous mud tyres). Id just put some BFG AT's on and put 2 spares on the roof (already have racks). We have slept in the back before and its quiet comfortable. Either that or put everything inside and do a roof tent.
I ended up with some 19” Maxxis Bravo AT980’s. Roof tray goes on tomorrow along with the awesome Boomproof 50” light bar.

Ended up giving the Disco 2 I was looking at a miss and decided to double my budget to around $13-15k.

Still keen on something Euro or UK for 4x4 shenanigans, have been looking at Disco 3, L322 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Touareg or Cayenne.

Last two are possibly the sensible options of that lot.V6 TDI Touareg comes in at that price, but a V8 Cayenne would be good fun...

I would steer clear of the L322 with the 2.9 BMW diesel, not because of the motor, but the transmission behind it.

L319's & L320's are going to be shitters in that price range IMHO.

Good info on the L322, thanks.

Plenty of choice in that price range, stuff like these is what I'm coming across.

The 4.0L V6 petrol in the Disco 3 is a Ford Cologne motor, used in the Explorer, aka Exploder
They have a timing chain at the rear of the motor for one of the banks. I wouldn't buy a high-mileage one myself.

The 4.4L Jag motor in that Range Rover Sport is pretty solid. The first gen ZF 6HP in the pre-2008 cars seems to be a bit hit & miss with high miles from what i've seen.
Biggest problem is 12 year old plastic and rubber, hoses, fittings & shit, but TBH you'll face this in just about anything euro at that age.

Air suspension compressors, filters, valve blocks, etc... all start to wear at that sort of mileage.

There are little shitty things that will need fixing, like the broken solder joint which stops the remote central locking from working, happens to them all and easy fixed when you know how.

I'd avoid one with a sunroof at all costs.

Can't help you with the Cayenne/Toerag, but Uncle & Stix know them well i reckon.

A d2/d2a will be a safer bet than a later rover. Still British but solid axles and less gizmos to break.

The factory Trans-siberia's had a neat setup. Ive got the same Roof rack that they run the spots on and would love to replicate. Interested to see what you do.

Have found a Touareg 4.2 V8 that looks promising, it has conventional suspension rather than air suspension but the price is right for a beater. Waiting to go have a look with VCDS (diagnostic tool) at the ready!

Just waiting on confirmation the timing belt, water pump and pulleys have been replaced before going to look, as it's around 160k km.
