    Dakar 2019

Only a few days out, but some more civilised viewing times.

    https://www.sbs.com.au/topics/articl...19-battle-peru

Entirely in Peru this time, so sand and more sand, which should be an advantage for the 4wds. Loeb in a 2 generation old Peugeot.....which might be a problem if they have checkpoints on the side of dunes, as in the past. Sainz and Peterhansel in minis, you'd think they'd have to be in the box seat. Gordon back after his indiscretion on the transport a few years ago, this time rather than a 7 litre V8 breathing through a straw, running blown Artic Cats and no doubt looking like a black and white minstral at the end of a stage....I see driveline issues!

Interesting in the bikes, one Aussie doing malle moto, usual Toby and Rodney Faggotter otherwise.

A "commodore" ute is also entered. Rumour of shift back to Africa in 2020 - ASO probably has bled South America dry, with not too many governments willing to spend millions at present.

Glad to see it still on SBS. Hope to see it return back to Africa in the near future but even in South America itís still highly enjoyable. Spirit of adventure.

Steve Ridley running the ute - looks to be a good bit of kit and he has been involved in rallying just a while. Check out Hazard Motorsport on FB to see the thing in testing.

My error, top mini guns are running the 2wd that debuted last year -

Sainz has fixed the suspension apparently!

According to one of the route organisers, really bad sections of bulldust and super soft dunes, where there's an expectation of lots of retirements.

KTM team must be a bit worried, Walkner arrived in Peru under the weather, Price with a recent surgical screw holding his wrist together. You do wonder at some of the speed with less of the navigation aspect in recent SA events -

Interesting, two years ago Minis where X1 based and my thought would be Magna Steyr would be using a BMW X1 "bodyshell" this year.

Toby 3rd - hand sore - with JBB taking the stage. Commodore was 14:37 back from Nasser over 88km.

So does anyone else think that it not being a multi-country rally has turned it from being the ultimate enduro rally to just another enduro rally?
It's kinda taken the shine off it

    Amazing way to compete -

has 3 guys helping him along the route, but not being able to get up on the pegs when traversing rough ground or lighten the front end over sand ruts would be a huge disadvantage.

Nav must have been a bit tricky today. Unusually, cars led out, Nasser lost lots of time, Loeb p1.....unless there's more timing glitches.

Is it just me or is this years event delivering much more as far as changing fortunes? Big chunks of time being lost and made. Tougher going with much more dune work ? Toby doing well with his wrist not 100%. Punching in consistent times. Barredaís finishing record isnít too flash. Brabec seems in good form. Some heavy hitters out of contention in the cars.

My kids have the telly when the Dakar is on, so I record it and watch later.

Is it just me, but is the picture quality and sound way out on SBS. Looks like its a series of pictures, rather than a video.

Nopics thinks the same and other shows record normally.

I really love Dakar but really hate the coverage we get.

Half of the program is arty slow motion footage or landscapes, sure that's cool but if you only have ~23 minutes for your daily highlights show don't use up half of it with that stuff. I assume they'd have access to a mountain of footage of the racing.

I think it's pretty decent considering how quickly they get it done.
It does get pretty hard to follow sometimes though with some of the news of the previous day being tacked into the the current days coverage.

Needs more truck action! Most bonkers part of the whole thing.

    VPN and the Frenchies https://sport.francetvinfo.fr/

Haven't caught up this year but they normally stream from the finish and show live action. Still filled with a lot of the puff pieces you see on SBS tho.

Other than that hit up youtube, from randoms editing together a whole lot of clips to teams posting their footage.

Yanky forum to follow the stages.

....a few odds and ends, interspersed with practice and baja stuff!

Nicola Dutto excluded after losing his navigator and going by road and missing waypoints on yesterday's stage. Rodney Faggotter out a couple of days ago, the Commodore gone too - unless it gets a restart. Gordon must be wishing for a/c again, or at least windows, after being stuck in fesh fesh/bulldust for an extended time.

Hmmm, not sure which would be worse, greasy hair after 2 weeks or grimy facehttps://twitter.com/LaiaSanz_/status...15882163396610

I feel sorry for Karginov if he genuinely didnít know heíd run over the cunt until he got to end of stage. Cunts were outside of a spectator area too.

27Octane is probably one of the better ways to see what really happens on the days stage. Eg spectator getting what looks like to be run over at around 12mins
