CEL - Faulty 02 sensors - Replace or "hegehog?"

'08 six cylinder outback that due to Japanese penchant for overengineering apparently requires 4 02 sensors..

Quote $800 to replace by mechanic - called repco to confirm and apparently front pair $500ish and back pair $300ish.

Mechanic - second hand through the wife - said he can get some sort of scrambler/hedgehog thingy into it for $450 which sounds like a bit for something that doesn't replace shit?

So, I'm thinking just replace them or is the above worth a tilt? Planning on selling the car next year and was going to ngaf about CEL light but lack of cruise control is suck and don't want to do the dodge and sell it without some sort of fix.

What are the actual codes that have been set to put on the check engine light?

This. The code should tell you exactly which sensor/s has the fault. I had the same issue in my V6 Prado. Code stated Bank 1, sensor 2. So cylinder bank 1, sensor 2 (the sensor downstream of the pre-cat).

I think it’s very unlikely all 4 sensors went at the same time, unless something has ripped the wiring out?

    As per above.

It's fairly normal for the heater circuit in one to shit the bed, but that in no way means you replace all four.

Ahhh. Cool. Not sure if I'm honest. Live in a world where two sensors'll do and cost fifty bucks so finding out you can have four and they cost $800 was surprising.

The price cited was for a pair according to wife, genuine price when she was googling, not sure which ones, were about $400 each on eBay.

To answer my own question with a quick Google, re the codes, it looks like the p130x codes for the oxygen sensor mostly specify front and rear circuit. So guessing it's probably just one but pay for the pair because that's all the definition they have...?

    No.

Get the codes read from the car, no guessing or googling.

Fucks sake the pimply kids at Supercheap Auto will plug in a scanner and read them for you for free...

Possibly a circuit used if the cats are removed to make the post cat sensors respond as if the cats are present. That avoids cat errors if there are a lack of cats or the cats don't work.

Awesome, thanks for the heads up mang.

Jack my friend, pimply kids do all sorts of things I can't be arsed, like the hallowed saturday or sunday afternoon post fishing and munting Zinger burger. But, short of it is, we're lazy, I don't have a scanner as it's one more thing I'd have to jettison again before the next move soonish and the car is in use most work days and weekends. I pay for my laziness but such is a significant proportion of the service industry.

That said, while she forgot to get the codes when she called for more info, it was apparently for the rear sensors. I or her will call and see if we can get the exact code and go from there. Not time to fit it in for the next fortnight at this point now.

going to give the other thing a miss.

Thanks Bob, Stan and Elf too.

You can even get a dongle and phone app and scan for the code's.

Bluetooth will work with Android and Wi-Fi for Apple. Torque is a good app for Android, don't have a Apple device so can't suggest a app.

I use one called "EOBD-Facile"on iOS with one of those 20 buck ELM dongles.

I've reset the CEL for O2 sensors with this a few times (over a number of years) on my 2003 Outback. Cheaper than replacing the sensors!

Pretty good chance it's a P0420 code, which isn't just as simple as the computer telling you which sensor to replace like people seem to think.

P0420 is usually a fucked cat, changing O2 sensors ain't gonna fix it....

It can be a lot of different things, it's a pretty vague code.

Total rube with this, but despite laziness, would like to learn. What exactly is required. Have android phone, can get app, link to dongle +/- good app?

Main thing is just not wanting to spend too much cash or take on a substanitally sized thing as we'll be packing up again in not much more than a year.

Had a P420 and a P430 pop up on my wife’s Lexus. I fueled it up the day before and didn’t tighten the fuel cap up to the first click. Apparently it is quite common to pop O2 codes on some cars. Cleared codes and tightened cap. 8 weeks later no codes.

Under steer is hitting the wall with your front end. Over steer is hitting the wall with your tail end. Horsepower if how fast you hit the wall. Torque is how much of the wall you take with you after you hit it.

Ahhh hah... Funny thing is the dude, when spoken to last a few weeks ago, mentioned just that... And so did some prominent yank motor mag site wrt range rovers.

At any rate, what combination of dongle and app (edit android) could at least produce a code to go on that could plug and play with my balls? +/- clear said code..

One of those I have no idea happy for input things.

This. Supercrap is $14 to get a full diagnostic print out. Ring the store first to make sure they have someone whop can plug it in (two stores I rang couldn't do it) and then Rock Auto for parts. Sometimes they ship parts from Melbourne so you'll get them very fast.

Once you've done the repair Supercrap will clear the codes for $24.

$28 they’ll give you a diagnostic report and you can go back to clear the codes with a follow up scan after the repairs.

They’ll price match online parts too if you find them cheaper elsewhere
