VE SS - Lifter / DOD issues

My VE SS has dropped a cylinder or 3 and has alot of nasty liftery type noises.. but the nature of how it happened makes me wonder if the DOD system itself has packed it in.

After speaking with works mechanic on the phone, he thinks it might be both. Its had a noisy lifter when cold but went away when warm, was decelerating from 60 to 40 when it lost its shit, which makes me think it was trying to switch between cylinder deactivation.

Obviously he will want to look at it before making a diagnosis, but he's also full for a week and a half. He said it might be worth removing the DOD system altogether.

I had plans to eventually put a cam in it, but i don't have the supporting mods, only a 2.5" catback, so he would likely have to put an L98 cam in it i guess?

does DOD delete also require a tune?

Any one got an idea of what this would likely cost me? it sounds like all of the labour for a cam without the payoff..but its also irrelevant because i need my car to run.

It's more than the labour for just a cam, because you need to remove the heads to do the lifters.
If you were thinking of doing a cam now is the time to do it, you'll need a DOD delete kit too which includes the valley plate.
Also, sometimes when the DOD lifters shit the bed they take pushrods/springs with them.

I just did ours. I had a dalecunt tune 18 months ago which disabled dod so the noisy fucked lifter didn't fail. I just bought a dod delete kit from vcm and had it fitted. There's a few gaskets missing but their replacement l98 cam is pretty good. Car is fast now. Was an expensive exercise because I am way too busy to do it myself. $1400 for the dod delete including the cam and 2k to fit it. I already had the tune which you need as well to make it all work, mainly for dod delete and afm delete. Probably needs a tweak to the tune now but with the l98 replacement cam it's quite drivable.

This is the end result, has a cat back varex exhaust and it used to be drone city. With the new cam it's good. L77 cam is the pits.

Bigger cam is a good idea if you haven't had a tune already, will only cost you a bit extra for cam springs and a better chain. Marv specced me an angry cam that would have made it proper rowdy but I'd already paid for the tune so decided it was all getting a bit out of control.

thats awfuly tempting, but its also going on my emergency credit card.. am i asking for trouble by just replacing the lifters if the DOD system isnt at fault? right now my focus is getting it running again.

The dod lifters are woeful, but if that's all the budget allows just replace them and save up $4k for the big step up to the dod delete, cam, springs, tune.

i didnt realise that heads had to come off even to just do the lifters...im not paying for that a second time when DOD does shit itself..guess im getting a cam? probably just an l98 for now since i dont have headers or intake, but at least it will be cheaper later.. possibly able to just load in a stock l98 tune this way too?

im guessing anything bigger than stock cant really go in with a stock airbox? eventually i want a VCM 532, but i dont think thats really possible right now with only a catback.

That cam is a baby and will be fine with stock airbox etc. IMO crazy to do an L98 cam if your eventual goal is this anyway.

Yeah, do the big cam at the same time. As far as I understand there isn't a canned l98 tune so it's going on the dyno anyway to do the afm delete and tune.
