yea appears to just be software to enable it. all cars come with the hardware. paying for it before it even works/is approved seems like pointless financial gamble.

Includes the Full Self Driving Computer

Full Self-Driving Capability is available for purchase post-delivery, prices are likely to increase over time with new feature releases

The currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous. The activation and use of these features are dependent on achieving reliability far in excess of human drivers as demonstrated by billions of kilometers of experience, as well as regulatory approval, which may take longer in some jurisdictions. As these self-driving features evolve, your car will be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates.

Would be approved here in current for I'd think at least for the onramp to offramp nav feature just released since you're still technically in control.

autonomous in Model S/X also has "find me" mode - in a car park, summon car via app, car comes to you

Man you'd want to have a lot of faith in its smarts to do that without fucking it up!

I'm sure that's what they want you to think - but given it's a zero cost upsell later...

Quick rundown on the pricing of the model 3 here:

    https://www.carsales.com.au/editoria...vealed-118772/

Bloody sneaky factoring in the fuel savings to the quoted price. Base model is actually $70k-ish, performance encroaching on $100k.

Much better value than the I3, and at least it caps the amount the other companies can charge for the competitors. Don't think I'd spend $100k on one though.

Vic Police has worked with Tesla, as well as its usual emergency vehicle suppliers, to ensure the Model X is a fully operational highway patrol vehicle.

Anyone else on PF ordered a Model 3?

Rumor is if you have ordered for August delivery you should be getting a call this week from Tesla, latest [unofficial] VIN stats show 5,000 RHD M3's made last month - I wonder how many are heading to Asia/Pacific vs EU.

From what i have read, not sure if there will be the enough AU/NZ orders for a Roll On-Roll Off, but if the boat follows Model S/X routes its route should be Auckland, Melb then Syd - Perth orders are trained from Melbs.

I cancelled mine, Boot instead of hatch was a deal breaker once we went and had a look at one in person. model S gets a hatch so they dropped the ball on the 3 for the sake of a nice glass pano roof in my opinion.

Model Y should sort that out once released in 2121.

The did stuff up the boot design in the Model 3 though, when lifted after its been raining the water runs into the boot as the guttering from the rear window isnt large enough.

That's pretty poor design on the boot opening.

That’s a tech company building cars. Nothing insurmountable in the next generation but a reminder that there’s a huge amount of details involved in building cars that takes generations of development.

I did wonder what would happen if Tesla went bust after i bought one, like would the car stop working if the Skynet servers are shutdown?

But bleeding money with $5b (of borrowed money) in the bank, at the current burn rate gives them 2.5 years, which is one of the best positions they've ever been in.

In all seriousness, looking at the earnings update they generated $600m of free cash and its looks like the loss is primarily from the drop in gross margin. If i was to speculate, that could be from needing to hire hundreds of meat bags to build cars in a tent because lots robots in the factory was a dumb idea.

Its simple, the cars cost to much to make but maybe moving some of the manufacturing to a country with cheaper labour costs would help, que Shanghai Gigafactory.

If youre interested in what makes these cars tick this guy has a good Youtube channel

Crazy enough to buy flood-damaged Teslas, pull them apart and make them work again

Bonus points for having a sense of humor and not being an annoying narrator

What’s the torque rating? Didn’t realise these things had 350kw! That’s mental.

Going by the wiki 473 hp (353 kW) and 471 lb⋅ft (639 N⋅m) combined, 283 hp (211 kW) rear motor & 197 hp (147 kW) front motor. Max torque at zero rpm hahaha

Most seem to do 0-100kph 3.4s with 1/4m in 11.7 @ 116mph, they loose a lot of punch at high speed with no gearbox, the dyno graphs look really weird.

Model 3 is 1800kg or something? Model S is over 2 tons

You dont get those kind of neck-snapping 0-100 times without a shitload of power and torque

    [edit] https://www.whichcar.com.au/news/tes...e-torque-video Model S = 450kw 1400nm

Its more to do with the battery pack not being able to sustain that output level for long. Not if you want a 10 year life that is.

Cell chemistry still has a way to go. But its getting there.
