FWD: 13s for $1300 Hyundai Excel

Been looking out for an excel, found one tonight, bit the bullet and got it for $550. Its a 98 model manual twin cam with working AC and no powersteer. 189,000kms. The car was unregistered and looks to of been in a paddock at some stage. The paint is rather crap but atleast its not one of the weird colours. I could not really test drive but it started and ran ok, clutch felt ok and all the gears seem to be there. Upon driving it onto the trailer it has a noisy CV joint which is a bit annoying, hopefully i can barter a second handy.

Got it back to the shop and degreased and pressure washed it. Looks to have been recently serviced but at some stage in its life it hasnt as it looks pretty poo inside. Engine sounds ok, tested the limiter a few times, threw some carby cleaner down the throttle body for good measure haha.

Here are some pictures complete with water enhanced glass effect.

I dont know a great deal about these engines, it appears to be map sensed which should be a bonus over an afm when adding some boost. Plan is to build an injector flow bench, find some injectors with enough flow to run the standard map on eflex. Add an intank pump, 1-3 reg, upstream injector/s with some sort of getto control, one of the twin turbos off a gtr (got one here), little IC etc. The cressida got away with some crazy ignition timing on eflex so hopefully i can run enough boost to get 102-105mph out of it which should let it run a high 13 with fwd disadvantage.

Good purchase! I have a similar one I use for QR dirt sprints (practice only atm).

get onto pickles or manheim damaged auctions, you should be able to get a whole damaged car for $250 with all the spares you will ever need

Great to see someone bite the bullet.

Once I get a few things out of the road I hope to throw my hat into the ring too.

This is cool. Surely these things will be a perfect for a ghetto turbo setup and in fact a ceramic exhaust wheel GTR turbo would go ok - s15 BOV & front mount cooler setup?

Not sure it will even need a bov, got a 400x300x76 cooler i pulled out if the Gemini when I upgraded it. I could sell that to myself. The pair of gtr turbos I have are .64 turbine housings and look similar in size to a t25. Think I have a set of 2nd hand excel headers I can cut the flange off too.

I have plenty of other stuff on at the moment so can't promise a speedy turn around, I do like this sort of thing though

The whole differential thing worries me too, I don't think any LSD or mech locker setup is going to be budget friendly. Welded centre won't be an option on this as it will be a road car.

if they are GTR turbos they are much bigger then the nissan t25 option. I'm pretty sure they are bigger again on the exhaust side than the s14/15 T28 but same on the intake, either way no doubt you'll make it work.

The best bit is you don't have to feel guilty about stripping the guts out of an excel.

http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView...UBCATID=965#11 would run an additional injector ok, extend the trimpot onto the dash for fine tuning, activate it off a hobb switch or pressure switch. 2 setups even to give 2 points of resolution on boost

that jaycar thing is awesome,I might have to use that on the VK for extra fuelling

Is the injector pulse time preset on the board or can you adjust it?

Looks to be adjustable, they also sell an adjustable pwm motor controller that is a bit dearer but preassembled with an external pot
