    2002 Challenger budget overlander build

So a buddy of mine is a full time professional twitch streamer in the USA. He's come out to stream from australia for a while and such. His intention is to drive around australia and live stream all the places and little towns he comes upon for his american audience.

So its been tasked to me to find him a car and kit it out for an extended trip around the country. I did a bunch of research and what he needs is basically a overland modified 4x4 but with high speed internet and on a shoestring budget. And his viewers will basically pay for the whole lot, in the form of small donation goals.

We set a budget of $1000-1500 for the car and I hit up the auctions with him and got him a nice challenger for $850

So we won this auction, he went the next day and picked it up and drove it 300odd km back to my house where its currently sitting unregistered in my back yard. When he picked it up it blew a lot of white smoke for the first 5mins of driving then cleared up, and the day after he got back i let it idle for a good 20mins and after about 4-5mins it puffed out a little bit of white smoke then stopped. Pretty sure this is going to be valve stem seals, its so minor im in two minds as to whether to fix it or just put a bottle of Stop Smoke in it and not bother. Also the 4x4 light randomly flash's from time to time, i did some googling and this is very common with them and requires a $50 sensor to be replaced.

Upclose the paint isnt quite as nice as the pics show, but for $850 i reckon hes got himself the bargain of the year.

So i've put together a list of shit i'm going to need including
    rooftop tent
    invertor
    2kva invertor generator
    roof rack
    awning
    fridge
    first aid kit
jerry cans and rear jerry can mount
    2x 9db 4g antenna with bullbar mounts
bullbar (maybe winch if i get excited)
    spotlights
    air compressor, tyre deflator
general camping gear, webber q, plates, pots, pans, table, chair, sleeping bag
recovery gear, straps, shovel, shackles ..etc

As all of this stuff will only be used for 6 months before he flys back to america i'm going to just get it all from 4wd supastore rather than use expensive high quality shit. I reckon i can get all the shit in that list for around $3k from them.

All in all should be fun!

In the last 2 days he got around $1500-$1800 usd in donations paying for basically all the camping gear, the rooftop tent, roof racks, awning, generator, inverter, 4g antennas and mounts ..etc

Probably need about that much money again (which should only take him a few more days) and then its time for an online shopping spree!

Doesn't look too bad. Chase up either some HD rear springs or assist airbags, and some new shocks. Bloke next door has 2 series 1 PAs, leaf rear. I'm thinking about picking up a manual to teach the kids to drive in, be stuffed if I'm going to let them loose in mine.

Hit up kings or the outdoor superstore. Should deck it out for reasonably cheap through them.

The old models are a good bus and should do the trip pretty easy. Id be guiding him to a couple of lessons in how not to end up dead in Australia, start off with anything animal or insect will most likely kill you.

And duck what a time to be alive where internet strangers will fund a trip around a foreign country, lucky cunt

He's going to have fun trying to stream from a lot of places in Australia. Telstra is pretty good with their remote coverage, but it's still mainly town (and highway) centric, so if he's in national parks things will get very difficult.

Apart from that this sounds like an awesome idea.

Mitsubishi V6 + white smoke = head gasket for sure.

                  Thanks for your advice guys.

Admittedly i'm not a mechanic, and even a pretty shitty backyard one.

What should i be looking for to 100% tell whats up with it?

As i said, when he picked it up it was smoking pretty bad, he drove it for around 5-10 mins and it cleared up. Then he drove it 300km's to here and it didnt smoke at all. We then left it overnight and I went and started it the next day and ran it for 20mins. After about 4-5mins it let out a puff of smoke for 10-15 seconds then stopped and went back to no smoke. We found paperwork in the car indicating it had been sitting in the auction yard for months and months.

Based on furious googling i found a whole bunch of other people with the same motor saying valve stem seals. So that what i am assuming it is. These people are getting good results using 20w60 oil and some stop smoke, or just replacing these seals. Also from previous experience with blown head gaskets the "smoke" tends to make that burnt coolant smell, which im not getting.

If it is a head gasket, is it cheaper to get someone to replace it? or just ditch the whole motor? 2 seconds of googling found a wrecker selling a complete motor for $900 with a 3 month warranty. So i'm sure if i hunt around i'll find one for half that. I've got a good honest cheap mechanic here I use for a lot of things so i'll get a good deal from him if needed.

Just belt the heavier oil in and be done with it. If you're suspect get your mechanic mate to do a compression and leak down test to put your mind at ease re headgasket.

Hope he's popular, he'll need the donations to keep fuel in the damn thing.

try some stop-leak. it might swell the rubber enough to improve it.

Thats what i've done, over the weekend i dumped the oil and filled it with 20w60 and a bottle of stop smoke

Its still smoking but because its got no rego i cant do more than let it run a bit in the back yard, id be keen to see how it is after a good drive.

Either-way its at my mechanic for rego today so i asked him to take a look and repair if its not crazy expensive, so later today i suspect i'll know whats up.

We polished the headlights to remove all the yellow crap over the weekend

As for money, hes raised 5k usd in the last week which basically pays for all the accessory's listed in the first post. Its amazing to watch, they just throw money at him, he can do a 3-4 hour stream and make $700-800usd easy.

Yeah Twitch has taken over from Youtube as a lucrative way for gamers and vloggers alike, to broadcast their content.
