    The xterra

So a couple moths ago the wife smashed out the little one, so we felt we needed something bigger. After fatherhood I found myself replacing horsepower stats, lap times and power to weight with cargo space to weight ratio, usable space vs vehicle size, passenger leg room, safety ratings and reliability.

Surprising cars for space where the FJ...a lot more usable space than it looks and disappointing cars where the LWB JK wrangler, huge car with very little space. Nothing seems to beat an AU wagon though.

In the end settled on the xterra as it was the best value for money with more usable space than the options. Wife also wanted a 4x4 so we can do family trips etc. VQ40 is a good thing and makes around 270hp and is very reliable. Chassis suspension etc is based on a Navara chassis with a shorter wheelbase.

Managed to score an “off-road” model that we looked hard for as it comes with better gearing for bigger tyres, 32’s stock, rear diff lock, bilstien suspension, storage compartment in the roof rails for recovery gear etc

So finally got this thing off-road on the weekend. Enjoyed it and it went well. Was a bit of a shame as a mate got his car rolled. Worst part was he wasn’t driving.

For some reason Tapatalk won’t let me post vids. Does anyone know how to do so through Tapatalk?

That rolled over so easily. Looks like you could really hurt yourself if it did a few slow rolls

So the xterra is just d40 pathfinder dipped in arse i assume?

Should go real well in the dunes with the vq40!

If it's like the previous generation Xterra it's more like a D40 Navara wagon. The Xterra was aimed at those who wanted/needed an SUV but still wanted something that was good offroad/not going to be scared of using.
They got a cult following pretty quickly after release.

Yeah an awful line, you can't hit the crest at that part of the dune or your asking for trouble. Driver also fought it after the engine was over. One thing to always remember in dunes is that once the engines over, the car is over as majority of the weight is there it will pull you down. That same day I have a few big moments also as we continued on after we got the LR on a tow truck.

Closer to a shortened Navara ute turned into a wagon. Still runs leafs in the back.

Yeah the VQ40 is good fun a lot more torque than the Jimny...

But I discovered a negative and that was when leading people think they cant follow due to power. When leading in the jimny you can always push them to have a couple more cracks as 80hp made it up.

                        The xterra

So after a trip stuck in the dark in some difficult dunes with the stock candles for headlights I finally wired up the light bar and plugged back in the stock fogs[emoji51]

Here is the differences in pics

                        Stock candles:

                        Light bar:

                        All together:

For myself spread of light is important, my other car has a roof set up I did that I am happy with, but wasn’t expecting much spread from this tiny bar just distance. I was pleasantly surprised:

Out the window with stock headlights only:

Out the window with stock fogs:

                        Out the window with lightbar:

Not bad from this small thing:

So ended up blowing the engine on this...

I’ll just do a replacement as for the most part they are a good thing. But unlucky I guess

We did a recent trip to fossil rock to pink rock to big red. Was romping on it pretty hard around pink rock. Crank is spun and engine got hot. Fitted a 2015 engine in. No idea of kms. It’s in now and onto kessab.
