surfs are what were sold in japan, so thats what all your imports will be over there

Indeed....we have been the dumping ground of Japanese cars since the 80's

Realistically we all knew it was going to happen.

I think I'm pretty keen on a UZ conversion at this point, but I want to go with one of the more modern ones with VVTi and more compression. Either a 1UZ or a 3UZ. So far I'm not having a lot of luck finding one, so if anyone has any leads please let me know!

That thing will handle sand with no problem exactly like it is now. The v6 is a great choice for the beach. The lsd will be there in spirit only as they don't last. Even a new one has maybe 20,000kms in it before it's practically useless offroad. Quite a few options for lockers but might not need one?

I have a huge amount of experience in this model and the surrounding years and they are generally a good thing. Front CVS break if you mistreat them or lift and they get more angle ,so do front crown wheels for that matter. Try not to get air going over dunes as that's what does it. It will survive the first few then later on randomly break at a time when it shouldn't.

The engine can shit cylinder heads occasionally but other than that they are pretty tough. Seems to be a luck of the draw as I never saw the problem in my circles just read about it. Bit thirsty but trouble free in my experience. We used to always fit extractors but it doesn't need it. Having said that once you see the exhaust manifolds you will understand why the extractors got done all the time. The difference was significant to power and economy.

I suggest fix the broken bits, do the maintenance and just have a good time.

I have a soft spot for these car's, growing up dad always wanted one and at the time he was poor at feeding me etc.. eventually, he got one and it has been put through heaps. it was one of the cars i learnt to drive in 20 years ago.

As Staples said about the heads and CVS are the most common problem my dad had with his, he has blown two bottom ends though as well.

                  Prado 5VZ? More strokes.

Starter motors are a cunt to do.

But yeah, give it the full 80,000km service (filters, oils, wheel bearings), and you'll be pretty much good to go.

LOL as tempting as it is I don't think I'll be going turbo this time around. Especially not if I jam a UZ engine in there, there will be barely enough room for the engine on its own!

Thanks for all the info, and that's good advice.

I'm not planning to get any air in this thing so hopefully the CVs will survive, and I'll try not to cook the engine too.

It's one of the things I considered but if I'm doing an engine swap I think I'd prefer something better, and it's looking like dropping in a 1UZ won't be much more work. But we shall see!

That's more or less the plan for now. I have a camping trip at Bribie Island coming up in 3 weeks so I don't have time for any major surgery but I'll certainly tackle any service and maintenance items that need doing before then.

                    - Radiator looks a bit sad and there's an imprint of the engine fan in the core which is a bit worrying. I'll either recore it or get a replacement aluminium one.
                    - Most of the coolant hoses are a bit suspect and some are missing. I found a complete kit on ebay so I'll replace the lot.
                    - There is a noticeable driveline vibration at speed so I'll get under the vehicle and check the condition of the unis and centre bearing.
                    - Hadn't thought of wheel bearings, that's a good idea too!
                    - Install a decent trans cooler and P/S cooler.
                    - Check brakes.
                    - Replace all fluids and filters obviously.

Anything else I should be worried about before my trip?

I had a quick look and they seem to go for big money.

I saw a ute style 2wd one somewhere with a version of those stripes the other day, it wasn't a flash show car or anything but had solid 80's cool vibes with the little flash of colour. Do it!

Well thanks to Do the safety dance. it looks like a 1UZ and possibly manual conversion is going ahead. Only a few days after buying the car, not a bad effort!

Does anyone have an opinion on auto vs manual for offroad/beach duties? I'm a total noob with this stuff.
