      Yes there is miles of room under there and I probably wouldn't put a turbo way up the back. Interestingly mine doesn't have the muffler in your picture, which probably explains why it's so loud!

        No, it was made of cheese and blessed by the Pope. that is why it is holey

        Oh random. That being said, mine only has the middle muffler, there is no muffler behind the diff on the Hilux due to the tray.

          So I spent some time studying this wiring diagram out of a US spec Haynes manual:



          Apart from the wiring colours being totally different I think this is what I have, or close to it.

          The diagram shows a relay in the lower left ("A/C cut relay") which I think is the relay I mentioned earlier, and it's connected to a thermo switch which pulls to ground at 108 degrees. My guess is the mystery wire which makes everything work connects to that thermo switch. So at some point the switch has become damaged, or the connector fell off, or the wires got chopped somewhere, so the switch never pulls to ground which means the relay is never triggered which means the AC never switches on. I can't be certain this is what's happening but it matches the available evidence.

          Anyway to test my theory I need to find that switch! Can anyone tell me what it looks like and where I'm likely to find it? I'm guessing somewhere on the hot side of the system going by the temp it switches at.

            Radiator or water plumbing. It’ll be another safeguard against dumping heat in front of the radiator.

                Just patch in your own harness to cut the compressor in and switch the condenser fan on, lol.

                  Well you get the prize*, it was exactly that. I found the various temperature sensors at the back of the engine and sure enough there was a connector with a snapped off wire and a loose wire nearby:



                  As soon as I touched the end of that wire on the manifold the compressor fired up, so that's gotta be the thermo switch. Problem is, how do I repair the connector with almost no wire sticking out?



                  Well my policy of never throwing away worthless old junk has paid dividends once again - the old engine harness from the Celica is hanging up on the shed wall, and I was sure I'd seen a similar connector on that. After a brief search I found it, and yep it's identical:



                  So I soldered that onto the loose wire in the 4runner, plugged it back into the thermo switch, and went for a test drive. Success, everything works, the AC switches on and blows icy cold air out the vents just like it should. That's a solid win!

                    It’s good to work this stuff out so that when you do the engine swap and it ceases to work you know what to bypass or have the Haltech trigger.
