Ok after more dicking around I have fitted an even smaller restrictor and it made no improvement.
I have contacted the turbo place and they've confirmed that it won't need any restrictor at all. They made a few suggestions but they're all the things I've tried.
Which is prettymuch what I thought, but I had to try something. Tried two different sizes and no luck so have reverted it to as-was with no restrictors.Hi Shifty
No it doesn't need an oil restrictor.
Ok well we're on the same page at least. The seals are original Garrett items and are new and not worn. This means the oil is flooding the bearing housing.
Big fark-off breather (15mm?) and a near new engine so this shouldn't be a drama. I did think that maybe the scavenge pump was creating pressure in there but having disconnected it entirely and drained the turbo oil into a pan the result is no different. You need to check and make sure there is not pressure in the sump that is forcing oil upwards
Well it's not, hence scavenge pump. As mentioned have also drained into a pan so that is clearly not the issue.also have to make sure the oil drain port is above oil level on the sump
No blockages. As mentioned completely removed the drain system and it didn't change the situation at all.and the hose that goes into it is not kinked or blocked.
Not using silicone at all. In fact I'm running no gasket at the moment...Plus if you've silicon glued the drain adaptor onto the turbo, there is a great chance that the silicon have clocked up the drain hole once pressed. Remove all silicon and replace it with paper gasket.
I'll be back on Friday if you want give me a ring and I can assist you further over the phone.Originally posted by 350stato100% agree with Shifty

be conscience that there can be residual oil in the turbine housing that will take some time to burn off... so you can be changing things and it will still smoke...
there may even be oil in the exhaust and mufflers that will need to burned off..
pete's 740 turbo wagon had a dodgy PCV that was pressurising the sump and pushing oil past the turbo's seal, it took AGES for it to all burn out..

I assure you, I can pull it off.
The breather is factory and runs pressure to the airbox so that's not the problem. Even if it was an issue in itself, it can't be part of the problem I'm experincing at the moment because I've drained into a bucket.
Tim - have removed muffler etc and cleaned out all the oil... but still there might be some in there so once I fix the leak from the oil cooler (fark farkin) I'll take it for a longer ride to get it right up to temp and see what happens...Originally posted by 350stato100% agree with Shifty

Oil smoke issue seems to be 99% sorted.
Seems like the problem WAS actually the oil drain I paid top dollar for, but wasn't clearing up as the leak was so bad that it was actually running back into the headers.
I can't really give it much until it gets a proper tune, but it still seems to smoke a tiny bit after a quick handful so not sure if that will settle down or I'll need to do more work on it.
Could also be an issue with oil pressure/flow climbing with revs.Originally posted by 350stato100% agree with Shifty

It was all traced back to a dodgy oil drain, I have improved it dramatically with stuff I had lying around the garage and it is now 99% solved. When I actually open my wallet again I'm expecting that (a) it will look better and (b) it will fix that last little bit of oil smoke.
This shows just how much oil was getting into the exhaust initially:

This was oil feed restrictor mk1; tapped a thread into the banjo bolt, wound in a carb fitting and ground off the excess for a nice finish. A later revision had an even smaller hole but neither fixed the smoking issue, as the problem was oil out rather than oil in.

Rode to work today
