    My Suzuki 1402cc turbo

    Hey guys

I always loved the GSX1400 since the first model with the white rims, and from the moment I sat on one at the Gold Coast bike expo early this year I just had to have one!

It was less than a month before I had a shiny new one in my garage:

The bike is great fun, has that classic look, and has gobs of torque combined with good brakes & handling. It does lack outright fasts (11.2@119 1.85 60ft) but the torque is unbelievable and the Staintune muffler & Power Commander I fitted made a good difference to rideability, power & the overall feel. This is a great 'do it all' bike, and aside from commuting I've been to the drags, QR, and camping on it.

Still, missing the 174rwhp of my previous ZX12R and not being one to leave well enough alone... I decided it was time to go turbo.

Engine is a low-revving 1402cc oil-cooled inline four, with an already-low 9000rpm redline being irrelevant given that the show really stops at 5500rpm and the bike benefits from short-shifting. With the breathing mods it opened up to about 6200rpm so the turbo is a logical choice to make use of the available revs - confirmed again by the very low 9.0:1 static CR compared to most cars which are higher than that and most modern bikes which are 12.0:1 or even higher.

The turbo I had made specifically for the project, but for lack of a better description it is a genuine Garrett CHRA (which I had to get from the states, what a headfuck) with knockoff Asia housings and can loosely be described as a T28.

The bike is currently in getting the main fabrication work completed.

Many thanks to JZK25, whose keenness to be involved in putting turbos where they don't belong has assisted in my pursuing an otherwise dreamy project.

Will post pics later this morning, once I've had my morning coffee.

Initially I will be looking for around 150rwhp which probably doesn't sound like a lot but by my maths the torque output should be about 140atw so it should be a crazy thing to ride. That's also a lot of power from a 1400cc motor that is more closely related to an old car engine than a modern bike engine!

Once the bike has had a bit of a shakedown I see no problems making a genuine 180+rwhp.

i hate these bikes, but love the concept! Sounds like an expensive project tho! What was the issue with having to custom make the turbo? just the small size engine?
Turns out, far too much has been written about great men and not nearly enough about morons

      I approve of this project.

Mostly, the the fact that the engine is oil-cooled only and also that it needed to be fairly compact externally while still flowing the required power.

I know that people have run watercooled turbos without the water attachment, but there are a numberof reasons such as reliability, heat soak, impact on intake temps and impact on engine core temp (as the oil is the only source of cooling for my motor).

          Inside the plenum:

          Underneath the plenum:

Plenum dummied in place with a stylish piece of radiator hose:

As you can see, the side cover will hide the plenum nicely. That rack is now goe, and hopefully before I put I together I'll also have a new undertail for it to remove that ugly mudflap.

          Rear view of plenum fitted:

          Header pipes started:

Header pipes looking more complete (note turbo sitting on the ground under the bike, will be mounted at the rear under the swingarm - also shows wheels have been painted white):

ps: i need some 44mm silicone hose in BLACK. probably about a foot of it in total, or four short sections about 3" long.

if anyone has some offcuts lying around i can take them off your hands, otherwise let me know where to get in bris (prefer northside) for cheaps.

                Clearly.

Should still go heaps better than a stock Supra and a cupboard full of parts.

So what is Al doing on this? Pretty much the whole job? Come on Al, pipe up I can see you lurking!

I guess there will be no need for a muffler now either :D

Al is doing the most important stuff, all the metalwork! Exhaust, plenum and intake pipe will be done by the time it leaves his shop.

I've done the disassembly, ecu (power commander, multi port hub & 2bar map sensor) and oil cooler upgrade and once it's back will be doing the fuel system, oil lines, scavenge setup, base tune, etc, and a few shakedown rides etc before taking it to LAE for the final tune.

It will be running that muffler still, I'll see how it goes for now and will upgrade later if necessary. As I'll never want more than 250hp crank the muffler that's on there should be heaps, especially given the short exhaust path.

Yeah it's been a while but it's good to be back 'unfinishing' projects.

The Corolla is causing me some headaches (wheels stolen, engine mounted but not happy with where it is) but I'm leaving that for the minute until the bike is done and then I'll get into it more seriously and really get some shit done.

Looks like fun, will be good to see what it can do when it's up and running.

Better to start and not finish than never even try and start.

What are you doing for oil scavenge?
"Where can we get hold of a Vincent Black Shadow?" "Whats that?" "A fantastic bike," I said. "The new model is something like two thousand cubic inches, developing two hundred brake-horsepower at four thousand revolutions per minute on a magnesium frame with two styrofoam seats and a total curb weight of exactly two hundred pounds."
